Depends on what you call 'em!
But, yes you can call ahead. I find though, that I have better luck when I'm actually on the property.

I called the receiver. Answering machine indicated I called the appointment scheduling dept. So I called back at the indicated business hours and asked.
They asked me when could I get there, I told them and he said that would be fine. I asked for his name.
Key point is to always get a first and last name of anyone that tells you you can show up early, or reschedule you. Had a Walmart produce receiver play dumb once when security called them to see if it was ok for me to come in.
Nighty night from Effingham... FM had me a new load before I left my 90. Got out of Chicago around 1400 thanks to a quick unload. Not enough on my 11 to grab my next load before breaking.
Open window pickup before midnight tomorrow with a drop anytime before midnight on Friday in Ogden, UT

Exit 16 I65 Loves in Indiana. Decided no point driving threw the night just to fight for parking in TN. Only 4 hours or so left to drive and don't have to be there till almost 3pm tomarrow. -
I try not to leave any hours on the table. I dont waste time just to use my clock... I just try and use as much of my clock I have available each day productivly.
When you use those hours, without a restart, they are gone for a 7 days. When you run up against your 70, the more hours that you get back each day are potentially better load miles.
Example: Today, monday, 11 hour trip. I use 8 today, 3 tomorrow. Thats 11 hours I could have got back next Tuesday, instead Im getting 8 back next Tuesday and 3 back on next Wed.
3 hours is potentially a 165 more miles before payroll cutoff on Tues.
Some days you just cant help but leave hours on the table... like pickup and deliveries, waiting for appointments. -
Yup... pays to be proactive. The worst that can come of it is you get told "no." Best case, you're onto your next load early.
I'm really, really, really glad I don't have to run my hours out any more!

If you're not comfortable running at night, don't. OTOH...

- Vary rarely get pulled into a scale.
- Never have a problem finding parking.
- Fits into the early morning DC appointment deal nicely.
