We have a small company that used to use our yard as a drop off point in the 80's and 90's.
They only had 7 trucks but they would do over 290 000 miles per truck per year.
They ran various makes , Euro and American.
They ran their trucks heavy and fast.
They were however meticulous when it came to maintenance.
I don't have a dog in this fight so I'll tell it as it is.
By a long way the best trucks were the 142 Scanias.
They got over 1 million Km on the Cummins powered Petes and Internationals.
They were reliable but they were forever changing parts.
Not road side but to keep them pristine.
The 142's just out performed the others in all aspects.
They had done over 5 million Km with 2 overhauls when they traded them.
After 10 years that they became a all Scania fleet.
I have never owned a Scania but that is where I gained respect for them.
I had a small all American fleet when I started.
I was anti Euro trucks because back then most fleets were either Euro or American.
A reliable , economic fast truck somehow wins you over in the end.
    How can it not.
Their looks even grow on you because you subconsciously associate them with quality.

if we are talking about cabovers this should be note this is probably worlds most famous COE truck

it is year 1973 and mercedes just present all new generation of truck called NG ( neue generation)

it is interesting they first appear as construction trucks slightly latter as road going vehicles

they were one of best trucks ever made and very successful

today those trucks can cost twice more than its competition because of their good image and proven quality

    long cab appeared in 1974
    [IMG]
all engines were with same components from smaller v6 ,v8 ,v10 and v12
    [IMG]
    air suspension come in 1975
    [IMG]

in 1976 6x2 with two steerable axles appeared
    [IMG]

middle long cab appeared in 1977
    [IMG]

mercedes NG construction trucks are very popular ( still) and have very good value even today they are popular world wide....

they had some small redesign in 1980 , get some exterior differences new wide cab which is higher little bit , new generation of engines , turbo and intecoller become more popular

    here is range from production
    [IMG]

this is very successful heavy haul unit including 18.3L v10 twin turbo and intercooled 16speed 6x6 wet clutch and heavy duty cooling
    [IMG]

in 1985 they get another update ( i have one of them)
new engines automated gearbox some chassis improvements .....abs and traction control becomes standard

they stay in production until 1988

they were exchanged by SK serie in 1988 which stay in production until 1996 when actros replace them but in some specific cases trucks were available until 2000

SK was also quite popular some of them have problems with gearbox but nothing too much

they get one redesign in 1995

and that is not over , they are build on seveval locations world wide by mercedes licence even now almost 40years ago .....

    I have a 1413 with a om352 motor.

The trucks pictured above were available up till the late 90's here.
They now often sell for more then they cost new.
    Never take long to sell.
Even the older bull nose ones are still in use.

yeah, old Mercedes cabovers... some kind of nostalgy. I saw my first truck today, Volvo F10, of cabover design... old rig. it's still on road... but with "driver wanted" paper under windhield... yep, today drivers do not want to ride old cabovers, they want new trucks with big sleepers

Is it possible to place that engine in a truck :biggrin_2554: but that engine seems to be for a ship? How much hp does it have? I think about 12.000
