    After your driving hours are up...can you drop the trailer and drive the tractor? For ex. if you get a hotel room drop the trailer can you go for something to eat? What if your done for the day... can you drive home?

    As long as you have been "relieved" from duty you can drive "bob-tail" just about anywhere. I used to live-load in Hillsboro Oregon and load time was anywhere from 36 to 48 hours. I often bob-tailed over to Tillamook to catch up on fishing.

    THANKS for responding. I have a driver giving me a hard time about this. One night he charged an expensive cab ride to get some food because he said he was out of driving time. Which I wouldn't mind if I felt it was a safety issue but there were 10 resturants within walking distance and he went to the next town. I've looked on the DOT pages and can't find anything that says you can't do what you want after you're relieved of your duties on your personal time. If you know anywhere I can get something in writing to show him it would be great! thanks again

    its a gray area good luck getting something in writting I have been given a written warning from DOT for bob tailing home 10 miles even after i was off duty then at another scale house i asked if it is ok and they said it depends on the officer.

    You are in a commercial vehicle. AS LONG AS YOU ARE BEHIND THE WHEEL you need to log as driving

    MOST companies do not want you unhooking from the trailer under load in an unsecured area. A motel lot is not secured. For that matter dropping the trailer at your house probably isn't either.
