I just bought a 276,000 mile Pete with a 3406E. The only oil sample that I have shows Copper at 108ppm, Iron at 36ppm. What should I do about this. What does it mean?
Bad oil sample

You sure it isn't 1,276,000 miles?
-
Yes, I'm sure
-
What year and did you see the O'haul built sheet?
Isn't the high Iron and Copper bearing? If so just re bearing it. -
That high copper usually comes from the bearings. What about the lead ppm? If you are not getting much lead count yet are getting a high copper count, it may not be bearings. Iron at 36ppm is not that bad. Most level 1 alerts don't trigger till higher than that. But 108ppm on copper? Sure would have me concerned.

Its year 2000. It hasn't been overhauled.
-
How does a shop find the problem. Drop pan and take off bottom of rod?
-
Yeah, sorry but that's most likely 1,276,000 miles. Think about it, in 11 years its only got 276k??? Maybe its got a lot of idle time...
-
ya, you might be right. Does the ecm store miles?
-
Yes it does, but ECM's can be changed.
