I think the driver shortage presents an opportunity to raise all of our rates, company hands and o/o's alike. We can pressure companies to use practical miles, for example, by letting everybody know which companies already use practical miles and which ones are stuck on household goods mileage.
As long as large fleets can trim costs by shorting drivers' mileage (among other tricks), they will continue to undercut independents.
1. What is your short list of policies that companies should be pressured to adopt (like practical miles) or abandon?
2. How can we pressure them in ways that will make them change their ways?

DrtyDiesel, Mommas_money_maker, DriverPatriot and 24 others Thank this. -
In ten years there will be a shortage of drivers that speak english. Mexican truck drivers will work for 10 cents per mile and take over.
Wargames, nckid, DOTrevenuepatrol and 3 others Thank this. -
How many trucks do you own?
-
1 and there is no driver shortage. Werner has been laying off drivers and there are several companies you never even hear about going out of business. The Truck driving schools would like you to believe there is a shortage to push more drivers through and the mega carriers have high turnover rates as they suck.

Mommas_money_maker and DriverPatriot Thank this. -
What driver shortage are you talking about? Schools and companies are recruting like mad promising poor souls that are unemployed and desperate the world....There is a surplus, the experinced guys are getting the shaft. Companies rather hire someone fresh outta school rather someone with experince.....Payscales went backwards!
My training company started me out after I solo'd out with zero experince at .34cpm.....This was early 2007. Today, I can't even find a company that pays that much......Makes me want to vomit when I think about it......DriverPatriot, Wiseguywireless, The Road Dog and 2 others Thank this. -
There IS a Lack of Suckers, for fleece operations, and seat depressors for the bottom feeders.
If there was truly a driver shortage rates would go up and with it pay.
When companies that govern their trucks increase them to do the posted speed limits, you'll know there is a driver shortage, until then it is just a scam.Wargames, pathfinder1361 and Wiseguywireless Thank this. -
Exactly right. Drivers are a commodity like corn, beans and oil. When there is a shortage the cost of commodities goes UP.pathfinder1361 Thanks this.
