Companies that were dumb enough to jump the gun and install EOBR's have a driver shortage but it's not bad enough for them to lower their standards and hire newbies .
They planned on using the cost of installing EOBR's as an excuse to raise rates . Not now . It was a choice , not a mandate .

I am leaving today a family owned outfit with 300< trucks. They decided that experienced drivers regardless of experience deserve to start at 32¢pm. I made that by the end of my rookie year 2005.

No exit interview. They cannot come close to the 10¢pm increase I'll get not to mention dock pay.

Why did I wait so long to go to LTL? Oh, yeah. Back to paper logs. How will I cope?

With all the baby boomers having a couple kids each. There is an endless supply of meat. Especially now with many losing their jobs seeing trucking as an easy fix.
I have yet to see a driver shortage and probably never will.
Just because a company craps on their drivers and many quit, doesn't mean there is a shortage. They'll start a monkey farm and clone drivers before that happens. :)

No, that means they have driver churn or a revolving door hiring policy.

Just throwing it out there! Glad you got your gig, but you were the one
Talking about. 32 tops at your old job. And it was more for others reading
Not all of as can be ltl. Best of luck on your new gig! But makes you
Wonder when you talk to 5 or 6 year exp drivers at. 28 to. 30 cpm and
Talk about changing and they are happy and don't want more pay. Talked
To a trainer with diff carrier and he was making same pay as my trainee
Once I cut him loose!?! Was talking over 40% pay raise to change ? But no.

    AGREED!

Also sounds like there's no driver shortage. Still, companies are targeting drivers to fatten their bottom lines. How do we exterminate household goods mileage once and for all?

    And some others:
    • per diem pay schemes where companies defraud drivers out of some of the "per diem" that they already scammed the government out of taking care of for them
    • ...having brain fart right now... What are some of the other ways companies target driver pay?

Simple, quit working for carriers that use HHG as their mileage format for paying drivers.

If 25% of the Celadon drivers called in Monday and quit and gave the reason that they were tired of the antiquated mileage calculation Stephen Russell and the rest of the Board of Directors would have no choice but to act on it.

Good luck though, You can't get two truck drivers to agree on the cost of a free cup of coffee.

DriverPatriot, ECU51 and Old Tex Thank this.
