Unless you meet the qualifications of 396.25 (d), you are NOT supposed to do anything but INSPECT your brakes. You must be certified to adjust your brakes. Should you ever get into an accident, you will be hung out to dry.
And judging by the way you had to ask if your adjusters were bad, I would pretty much venture you are not qualified under that DOT ruling. That is something you would have known.
Please read carefully that entire section in the "green book". -

times have changed drastically.Yes, at one time we could adjust our brakes, but no more, unless we meet the DOT regs/rules on this. It's in the book.

I break the law twice a week. Sorry but I'm not driving down the road on somebody elses word that my brakes are adjusted correctly just because they are "certfied".TowHaul Thanks this.

This is also a perfect example of misinformation from a truckstop lawyer. God only knows how many times we have been over these regulations, and shown that a driver IS qualified to adjust his brakes as he has to pass a written test on air brakes to obtain his CDL. However, most companies do not want the driver working on the rig.
Once you wash your hands and finish at the buffet, go try reading the book before chiming in. If you can inspect them, and you are experienced then you can ### adjust them!SHC and Pedigreed Bulldog Thank this. -
Hell, I do my own brake jobs on my truck. Changing shoes & drums on the Mack is easier than doing drum brakes on any of my pickups...and even those aren't all that difficult to figure out. If you've got even an ounce of common sense and are half-way decent with a wrench, you ought to be about to figure 'em out without too much trouble.
Main thing is just to be familiar with the different types of slack adjusters and know how to adjust the ones you're working with....and know when to put down the wrenches and seek professional help. -
Guys I gotta fuel my truck and I just cant figure out how to get the fuel caps off. Im turning it to the right as hard as I can but it just wont budge. Guess Im gonna have to call the shop.
