If I caught your friend, which I would love to, he would be in for some citations and fines, for sure.

Worse than if I, or any law enforcement catching him, if when he is overweight and over hours he hits the family of 4 in the minivan and hurts someone (even if he did not cause the wreck) he is in deep kimshi.

When civil liability lawyers pounce on the overweight over hours big truck involved in an injury wreck, and they will, they can take everything your friend owns and make it so he never owns anything again. I would hate to see that happen to anybody. That is an awfully hard way to learn a lesson.

 

Yup. If a trucker who's sitting stopped at a red light weighing 80,100 pounds gets rear ended by a minivan its payday for the lawyers client who smashed reglengtly into him. Had the rig weighed 79,990 and got rear ended at the stoplight, then no score for the minivan driver, no score for the lawyer, and no score for the FEDZILLA fmcsa folks who have solutions to problems that don't exist (in my hypothetical example here)

Were I to ever find myself hitch-hiking for a lift and had the chance to pick between riding with a seasoned trucker vs a minivan driver, you know who I'll pick.

I trust myself to drive my rig in a snowstorm when I'm dog tired, WAY before I'd trust a lift from a minivan driver in the summer on dry roads.

But I have driven a tractor trailer everywhere in North America, (USA & Canada and Alaska) under every possible weather condition and have yet to put a scratch on anyone. Over 20 years.

OK now a bit of reality..........Why is it that if he's driving a truck for 18hrs is a big deal but if he worked a double shift at a factory and drove home it's ok? What if my log book says I was "off duty" for 3 days but didn't actually sleep while I was home, is that somehow OK because my paperwork was good?

Overweight.......So 80k is safe but 85k is dangerous? How would a piece of paper known as a "permit" make 114k safer than 114k without that magical paper? Coming from someone who buys permits almost daily, it's not about safety, it's about the money. Pay the piper and your good to go!

Last time I checked this is America, I can drive on whatever road I choose assuming it's not restricted. If your "friend" chooses to drive on road "A" vs road "B" which happens to have scales doesn't mean he's a scofflaw. Scales are bypassed thousands upon thousands of times each day, doesn't mean anyone is breaking the law. Some people don't like to be harassed, when you have a guy that apparently used to be a German prison guard from WWII waste an hour of your day because you had a cab light out, your opinion of the scales changes.

As far as the bluetooth device is concerned, it's a joke. If the only thing between you and a flaming crash is the act of holding your hand near your ear then the "do not iron clothes while wearing" warning labels were made for you.

I've been known to iron my clothes while wearing them with one hand and talking on the cell phone with the other, while driving! Now if you see me with wrinkled clothes and a severely burnt left ear, I do suffer bouts of dyslexia.

He's got 30 hours left over in those 5 working days. Plenty of time to visit the OP's wife, snort some coke and make a few rate cutting phone calls and adjust that one slack adjuster.
