Hello all, Im a student doing a paper on the big business aspects of unloading services(lumpers) and how they have grown over the years. Im asking you drivers if you could let me know what distribution centers have lumpers in them( third party) and what company they are. Thanks for your help!

Most of the lumpers are in the grocery/perishable warehouses. In the Northeast you got Buzzuto's, C&S, McLane, US Foods, SYSCO, Wakefern, White Rose Dairy, and many more smaller distributors/warehouses that have lumpers. The lumper companies vary depending on what place you are at and if they have contracts (locally and nationally). There are a few major lumper companies anymore and the smaller outfits are either being bought out or thrown out by the bigger companies.

When I drove for Stevens Transport and delivered on the East Coast (which was quite often), I rarely used a "service", it was always "independent contractors" hanging out at the meat market districts who gave kickbacks to the receiving clerks.

The few times I did use a service, the rates were somewhat cheaper than the independents. I suppose I could have haggled but it was getting reimbursed so I didn't really care, lol.
