Get ahold of an employment attorney post haste! What this guy is doing is illegal concerning the reference, and if he persists (especially if you have documentation indicating history as an adequate employee) he's opening himself up to a successful lawsuit on your behalf.

Just give your states Labor and Industries a call first, and let them know whats going on. If you were employed then you paid L&I fees, and its there job to work for you. try that before you go out and hire a lawyer.

Thanks guys! I actually talked to an attorney at one point. I probably need to follow up with him and see what we can do. It just sucks because I don't want to spend all sorts of time and money fighting in court with these people; all I really want to do is put this place behind me. I left because I didn't like the place and all I want to do is move on with my life. But its like they are trying to make that as difficult as possible. Just doesn't make much sense to me. I'll check into L&I too and see if they can help.

I do not know about individual states or their separate labor laws; but every job that I have ever had (AZ, CT and NY). I was told and it was in there employee hand book that they will not give a personal reference, they will only confirm that you have worked there from your starting date and left on your exit date. Two of the companies that I was management at told us (the gods in the main office) that if anyone called for a reference check, we had to give one but we could only tell them the start date, exit date and if we would hire them back. The reason was they didnt want to be sued or have any other issues.
