You know there has always been the you experience to get a job driving but you can't get the experience with out the job.
So don't give me that whiney crap that I have to work for a crappy company to get experience .
I have been out here 30 years and I have never worked for a mega company. I never will work for a mega company.
Do you know that the little companies have more trucks on the road than the big outfits . There a all kinds of companies that have less than 100 trucks and offer everything the big boys do but will treat you like a person and not a thing they own .
You just need to get off your butt and knock on doors to find a job. You don't need to do Otr you can get a local job right out of school but you have to knock on doors and talk to these places in person .
The best jobs never make the paper or the help wanted ads online . You just need to keep your face and name in there mind .
Go behind the stores and and go to the industrial area of your town or the nearest big city and talk to the drivers and the loaders and unloaders.
One other thing don't believe this crap about a drivers shortage. If there was one you wouldn't need to do all the stupid stuff the mega carriers want you jump through. They would be paying more if there was a shortage.
So there ya go just some ideas how to get a job in trucking from a old crusty know nothing jerk-off!
Lol so good luck and try your best not to be just another mega carrier meat in the seat victim . They will chew you up and spit you out and even shed a tear over it !!! -
I have also heard many good thing about Maverick...had a rep visit our school today..seemed to level with us rather than try to BS us. Plus, pretty good pay and seemimgly achievable bonus pay. Drawback, they have a fleet of all automatic trucks.. so if you leave after a while you may have to complete a refresher course....I am still considering Maverick so it was good to see a rep at the training facility today.

Have you considered that 30 years ago it was 1981?
Have you considered that you have 30 years of experience compared to zero for a new person?
Have you considered that little outfits have more to lose by risking their expensive equipment to an untested rookie?
Have you considered that after getting your CDL you have a 2 month window before you are likely to get stuck paying for a refresher?
The realities facing a new trucker are different than what you had to deal with in 1981.
I'm not saying that bottom feeders are the only option for everyone, but no one can afford to wait around knocking on doors while that clock is ticking. I say if you are new apply to the places you would prefer to work first and if you don't have any solid leads after 3 weeks take that job at the mega company.w0lfy and Jimmeyjack Thank this. -
This is by far one of the most idiotic rules the insurance companies & carries have that most don't find out about till after they have started their cdl school training. And screws a lot of rookies out of having a real choice of where to go, or the opportunity to seek "gainful" employment in this industry.
As i never had to deal with these bfi's, I am kinda interested in what companies provide training yet are not bfis, myself???????

Just don't hit me if you go with Werner... I'm just about due to have Werner #4 hit me while parked.

Good advice... you won't find a job if you won't leave your mom's basement....123456 Thanks this.

You don't have to tell me it was 1981 I was there LOL
I started at 0 also and I heard you need experience to get hired and I heard the same crap you hear today. we just didn't have to pay to get a license like you do today.
Do you think things were cheaper 30 years ago ? a truck has never been cheap !
A 2 month window is just another way of trying to force you into working at and for a mega company. It is their rule not a law or insurance rule !!
The realities I face every day are the same ones any one in the seat faces today.
The truth is trucking has always been a catch 22 type of business .
Did you consider that even with 30 years of safe driving most of your mega companies won"t hire me ?
I am just trying to tell you all you DO NOT have to go to a bottom feeder mega company.
There are other ways to get your experience and not starve and be abused to get it !!
If that aint trying to help a new bee out then I give up !! I am going to get off my soapbox now and I will be quiet like a good crusty old jerk-off .... LMAO -
I just wanna get my time in and learn. As pointed out, us newbs only have so many options, and I assure you I have made 1000% more inquiries than beyond the 3 that are pushed by my school.
If I Squire/Knight works out in the long run, great. If not, at least I will get that 6, 12, 17 mo exp.
What is most important to me right now is being a safe driver and good at what I do while making a respectable income with the tools and experience at hand. -
I know a kid that went and got his CDL on his own. After he got it he walked up to an owner of about 50 trucks and asked for a job. This kid sold himself. He was enthusiastic and determined. The mans insurance company told the owner that he'd have to put the kid on a high risk policy. The kid asked how much more it would cost a year and offered to pay the difference. He's been with this company 2 years and just got off of the high risk insurance. This kid paid the difference in the insurance fo 2 years and still made a good living with this company. He should be an inspiration to anybody that really wants to get behind the wheel and do this job. He knew what he wanted and did what he had to do to get it.
CondoCruiser Thanks this.
