hypothetical towing question

Only if you happen to get yourself into a wreck while towing a haz-mat load.

As long as you're on rotation (and your company has a good relationship with the cops and various departments you deal with), cops generally won't harass a wrecker unless the driver is doing something REALLY stupid/dangerous.

 

This has been discussed before, and the general consensus is that the tow truck driver would need a hazmat endorsement.

Im not sure about that, but it would be my guess too. Too lazy to look through all the regulations.

I don't have a hazmat and towed many placard loads, no tanker endorsement and pulled lots of tankers.

Combos can be pulled across a state line only on the first tow after an accident, not simply for a breakdown.

Its your choice, but know you are breaking the law. Troopers tend to look the other way, especially if their road is blocked. But if something goes wrong their vision improves rapidly.

You should have a hazmat anyway so you know how to handle a spill or problem.

I worked a wreck all night with one trooper who kept telling me to call him by his first name because we are on the same team.... Next morning I grab a tow to drop on my way home and he gives me a ticket because he knows I'm out of hours

Does the driver of the truck being towed ride in the tow truck? I've never been towed in car or truck so I honestly don't know. If the driver of the truck being towed is in the tow truck and has hazmat wouldn't that suffice? The whole point of the endorsement is for accident response essentially. You still have a guy in the truck that knows that.

 

you dont have to have a hazmat stamp........but if there was something happen while in tow with your load your insurance company could not pay claim and protest you wasnt qualified to transport load. kinda loophole for them trust me went through that about 3 years ago insurance ended up paying but it was a long drawn out battle in court

 

Guess it depends if he charges you enough to cover the fines. Just poking at cha. I know I would not pull it if I was the tow truck driver.
