I am at the end of my first month doing city pick up and delivery and have come to a realisation. As I deal with the same people on a daily basis at shipping , recieving and retail businesses I am getting to know them a little more personally than I ever did when doing OTR work. These are the same people the OTR drivers deal with at the same facilities as me but the otr guys dont see these people everyday. I have realised that when mistakes are made or there are delays in the loading/unloading or just plain old screw ups that its not the end of the world. I have seen some drivers yelling, swearing , threatening and abusing the people behind the desks or windows at these places. I know there are some real idiots working in some places but majority are not. These people are just like you and me , trying to get the job done, make a living and get on with life. So next time you find yourself getting PO'd at some shipper/reciever/customer just think a minute before letting fly with the attitude and think on how you would like to be in their shoes for a day. Mistakes are made and #### happens, dont be the ### that yells and swears over nothing. Just be cool and they will help you alot more!
Peace out![]()

You have a point and it is a good thing on most occasions but I just recently came unglued at a shipper as they helped their buddies before helping me and I was there first only needing 1 piece loaded onto truck. They werent doing anything at all when I pulled into this shipper and then an hour later two trucks pull in and get unloaded and loaded while I patiently waited. When I asked what the holdup was, wasnt given a reason. I had my agent call the broker with "Im going to leave in 10 minutes" and bada bing I am loaded, only took a max of ten minutes total. Only thing I could see was a problem is that im not hispanic and all the others were. This is when I come unglued.

I know what you mean there. I used to get frustrated at particular places that were exactly as you just described. What accent you have seemed to determine how you were treated!

The miserable existence most of these drivers have makes them hostile to society.
When you work for yourself you can take off anytime you need an attitude adjustment. -
That's a sick avatar and screen name

I think the word you wanted kw9's rock is attitude rather than accent, but what you said is very true! When I thought that I was told "it'll be a couple hours before we can load you" just to get a reaction, my stock answer was "no sweat, I'll be in the sleeper, please wake me when you're done", you could almost see the guy thinking "#####, it didnt p!ss him off".

And alot of the time I get loaded early anyway.
Some say I'm too laid back because I understand ##### happens in trucking, weather, traffic, machines that are making the product are variables that you can't predict. So when a shipper can't load right away, oh well, I call dispatch and tell them I might not make delivery appt and try to have shipper put actual load time on the b/l and my ### is covered. -
Another good point on this thread is to make sure you thank people when they git R done. I will let the really good folks know that they rock and others will just receive a thanks. It may be the only thanks they get and they deserve it regardless of how slow or rude or anything that they may be at the time.

Very good point MMM!!! Drivers, think how good it feels when someone says "nice job driver" or "thanks for getting here despite the weather", if I was at a particularly bad shipper/receiver I'd make a point to say "thanks, have a good one" when I left. Also thanking guys if you got loaded quickly or before your appt time. Attitude is everything driver, whether its a cop, dot or anyone else, try going in with a good 'tude, it works wonders! Screw it if you're having a bad day, that was then this now, let it go smile!! I have DOT & cops cut me a break cuz I had a good 'tudeMommas_money_maker and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this.

Thank you gets you a long way with many people trucking related or not. It's always something I've made a point to say to people.
I've been doing local for about 4 months or so now and have noticed the same thing about going to the same places a lot. You start to see that sometimes it's just a bad day at a shipper/receiver and not everyday is like that. It's nice actually knowing people and they remember you as well.
Some of them though you just see that they're run like total crap almost everyday. Ralph's in Compton comes to mind in that category.Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this.
