Stevens never failed to reimburse me for lumpers when I made it clear that if I unloaded it I'd charge a lot more than what that guy was charging!

You are a very lucky driver.

Lumpers probably make $8/hour...
-
You're probly right but I was talking about getting paid the same amount they tell me the unloading charge is if I opt to unload the trailer.
My wife and I unloaded tires once and I wasn't too happy when I found out we were only gonna get paid half of what the receiver was gonna charge to unload them......
That's when I came to the conclusion that I ain't unloading another trailer. I'll gladly send in my macro 3 for a lumper AR and express code and pay with a comcheck. -
i would rather give my money to a homeless vet to help me unload then to some lumper service.... too bad it dont work that way...

I hear what your saying... but lumping is A LOT more work then just dragging them off the truck (usually). I take trailers of Bunzl to local food places everyday and it takes 4 or 5 guys 4 or 5 hours to take care of that trailer. That's 16 - 25 man hours. So really when your writing out that check for the $200 or whatever it is it's sometimes a crappy deal, yes, but sometimes it's a fair fee. I have to lump groceries sometimes like gravey and KFC seasonings and stuff like that and just 3 or 4 pallets sometimes takes me 3 hours. Imagine 20 pallets or more. Lumping a full trailer could take 1 person days to do by themselves if it's a good mixed load so it's not really practical.

Most companies want the lumper to unload, if the driver gets hurt it can be a nightmare.

I work for a lumper service and just do you know we dont make what they charge you guys. Some service pay there guys hourly some pay them a percent of the charge.
This is true I've heard from people I've met that some company's pay 8-10hr plus little more of you get the trucks done in certain time. Others like my company pay percent
just wondering why do you say this? Lumper are like you and everyone esle got family's to feed bills to pay etc. we do the hardwork while the companys sits back and rolls in the dough
Some loads are better than others got some that pay good for little break down and others that don't pay crap. We have a few different loads that come in are usually 2000-2800 cases on the floor breaks into 100-160 pallets mixed to hell and pays a whooping 40-60$ and takes me 3-4hrs to do myself cause I am fast but we got guys who take 6-8hrs on it..
Just figured I'd share a little info cause I hear it daily from drivers how they should stop driving and become a lumper cause they think that we get all the money when we only get a fraction plus the only trucks you make decent money off is the ones they charge. If you go to a place and it's prepaid lumper is pretty much doing your truck for freeandy Thanks this. -
I'm my case, I don't have to pay lumper fees. Company does. I just hand over the comcheck when the unload'in is done.
It does however crack me up when some of these lumping services demand that check before the unloading is completed..... -
I know its a lot of work, which is what I'm talking about. The only thing lumpers do extra that the driver can't do is bring the freight further into the warehouse where it will be stored after its been counted, received and sorted on alike pallets.
Another thing, as I said before, we the driver do it with a man-powered pallet jack. We don't get to use the fancy, powered equipment.
