I layed my end dump truck over last month. I've since bought another truck and pulled the wet kit and a few other things for the new truck and it's working but now I've got my 359 and I'm not sure what to do with it. Should I repair this thing or part it out? The damage isn't tooooo bad but I don't know if I could make it look like new again with my particular skill set, though I certainly have the tools for the job. I've done body and paint on many old cars and had them come out presentable, I'm just worried this thing will be hard to get straight again.
Damage on the truck: passenger fender munched up
passenger side of cab smashed in
passenger step broken
passenger blinker broken
hood doesnt look bent but not positive
Passenger air cleaner smashed
Truck specs: 13spd rebuilt about 30k ago
DS404 2 speed rears 4.11 ratio, front diff rebuilt 5k ago
Remanned 3406B, unknown miles but not the strongest motor I've had
Cozad ramp on back of frame.
So my question is this: Would I be better suited just parting the truck out or repairing and then selling it? Pictures of the truck:

Those are to pretty to part out. lol. I know what you mean though. How much money would you put into it for what you would get out of it. Alot of times you can get more money parting out than selling outright after fixed up. I would probably try to redo it...but thats just me. You would have to put pen to paper and check around on prices for the parts to see what you would get parting it out. Then see what use you would have for it after you fixed it up...and what you might get out of it after you fixed it back up. I think the repairs if only the ones you show wouldn't be to awful bad...just slow. A MIG would be very useful. Just get a piece of paper and put down some numbers and see if there is any sentamental value in it.

Agreed, depends. Here's my take, call salvage guy 'n have him throw a number at it then work the other side ( parts and labor ) to recon the truck. Leave the sentiment with your gal tho, this is a business decision that needs to be based on numbers.
There's something here I didn't see...... you were pulling a rock bucket and the tractor went over too? I see, not a frame less dump huh? Ok, What about the frame on the Pete? It's probably twisted to a point ? Almost have to be if a frame dump went over and tractor goes with it........ get a look at it with a keen eye and a measuring tape.....if the frame is torqued in the least.....salvage ! No brainer.

Wish you were closer. I'm in the market and I like those specs. Not really practical to haul it from Cali though.
-
If the frame is twisted (and it likely is) it should cost <$1000 to straighten with a 3 axle alignment included. What do you think the truck would be worth after it is fixed?
-
I've got no emotion tied up in the truck, I don't care which route it goes to be honest. I don't know if the frame is twisted or not, not really sure what reference points to use to measure it all. The trailer was a frameless, just the arms were trussed up pretty good and didn't twist at all when it went over, just took the truck with it. I got a little lucky with the trailer though, pretty much set it back on its' wheels and went back to work after welding up a couple cracks. Arms weren't bent or anything, it's almost unbelievable in that aspect.
KWforage - as a potential buyer what do you think would be a reasonable asking price on the stuff? I posted it on craigslist and basically have been offered around $2k on a consistent basis. I'll scrap the thing before I take that for it. I have half a mind to pull the vital parts out of it and let them sit but I don't want to dedicate that much space for parts I will most likely never use.chalupa Thanks this. -
Take the vitals out....scrap the hull...then find a truck with a busted drivetrain or engine and implant your good stuff. You might end up with a pretty decent ride. Not trying to pry...but did the insurance make it right?
Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
I'm no expert and it's hard to say without getting a better look but I would think you could get atleast twice that selling it whole. What year is it? Someone like myself who is just going to off road it shouldn't care a whole lot about the cosmetics. Depending on what supension you have I would think you could get close to the 2k they are offering for just the back half if you cut the frame behind the cab. I would love to have a 2spd 4.11 in my truck. Like you said though if you part it out you need some space for part storage till the stuff sells. We got 1k in scrap for just the motor and front section of frame out of a 377. Lots of copper wire in there.
-
Part it out or do what Scrapper said. Don't forget though, by 2015 the MOTOR will be useless due to "CARB" emission's in Cali.
-
Just the engine alone, complete and running around here sells for $6500.
