I really don't want to seem like a BW900 cheerleader, but that is the mentality I try to foster in my o/ops. You need to achieve consistent work. When I hear about o/op sitting for more than one day waiting for that great load, I cringe.

I always look at the big picture. Leaving home with a cheap load is just about always a mistake. I look at coming back different and connecting loads, etc.
During winter I try and stay south too, so it hurts me a little but I don't like snow. If it weren't for transmission problems I would be on vacation.
was gone in 10 from mid dec. till feb. visiting inlaws in east africa.
temps. was 65-95 degrees beats hell out of sub zero.

Ya have to negotiate your butt off. I ended up starting out at 1550 for a load. When all negotiating was over I got 1850. Which is where it should be. Trucks are plentiful right now. And the brokers know it. So obviously the rate declines. It is your job as an owner to get the rate up!

I love it when some complain about the cheap rates then say that they take a cheap load themselves and average the rates. If you haul one load for $3/mile and another for $1/mile, you can conceivably average $2/mile. Or, you could deadhead out of the bad area to a better area where you might get a load for $2/mile or better. I suppose that I am one of the stupid ones who think that every load should show a profit. I have been at this for over 40 years and have never bought into the idea that you can haul for fuel money to get to a better freight area. I will just deadhead out. I get enough going into one of these bad areas where I can afford to deadhead out. I made a decision a long time ago that I won't allow me or my trucks to be used to make everyone money but me, even if it is to get back to a better freight area. Taking these cheap loads are the reason they are cheap. If you refuse to take that $1/mile load and just deadhead out rates will start to come up. If you want rates to come up then refuse to take the cheap freight. Problem solved.

Everyone is out to blame the large companies but its not their doing. Its the free hauling O/O that hauling it. I have ran across too many of these idiots saw a woman big ##### WS hauling 40Klb 1000 miles for $1000 have had loads pulled because broker found a dumb trucker to haul it cheap

It is both. I think that I have mentioned this before, but at one time Maverick was supposed to have been hauling freight out of south Texas for as little as $0.50/mile. I don't think that you can blame one segment over another. Both independents and major carrier have been hauling the cheap freight.
