For the time being then they find another herd. I made consistantly 2.80 to 3.00 a mile when fuel was 5.00 a gallon.now they think 1.75 is doing you right in most cases . Todays forecast more of the same cheap and free with mixed in rain showers

Don't ya'll just love this time of year. Everybody gets cheap and your "so called" direct shippers start shopping around because some freight broker can find plenty of trucks cheaper than your best rate. Been getting beaten up the last month or so by a regular. No worries though. Found a new customer this past November that is interested in service (cranes at each end) and doesn't flinch so much on price. Can't wait for the busy season to hit so we can hammer the "shoppers". The rates I quote have always been fair and if you kept me busy all winter I'd hold the line on the increases during the summer. Had one call up last summer crying that they couldn't find any steps. Did a bunch of loads and they accepted every quote with no bickering. Now they still ask for quotes but I always see them the next day on the load board. Hard to think we're talking prbably about a couple of hundred dollars difference. The cargo value alone is typically 150 to 250k but I guess 200 dollars broke the bank. Oh well, when they call again this summer the'll get the high spot market rate since there is "no loyalty".
And on the fuel, can't wait. When it goes north of $4/gal all those cheap haulers won't have the cash flow or credit to fill their tanks. Looks like a perfect storm is brewing!

Hurah hurah today must be my lucky day, no one else wanted this load for the cheap price. I load tomorrow @3.36 a mile.
    2600Lbs. @ 9.5 wide should be a easy run.

If fuel goes to $5/gallon, this year will definitely be interesting. I feel that things have been a little soft on the open deck side since mid December. That being said, I don't think there is much excess capacity on open deck. I expect to see things start to pick up early in March. $5/gallon would eliminate a fair number of marginal carriers & o/ops that choose to park their trucks. Those with the sense to charge a proper rate for their services should be in a good postion. Will it happen? Who knows?

Coincidentally, it is hard for me to talk in strict per mile terms like most of you are able. For me it is always rate + FSC. So when you are talking about $2 mile, I have to convert this back to 1.45/mi + .55/mi FSC. Our rates and system are all set up around a RPM and a seperate FSC.

If fuel hits $5 this year that will mean gas is high to and alls i see that doing is putting the economy in revearse and not good for any of us. Last time $5 fuel came there was plenty of work the slow down had not started yet, this time around the economy is to fragile to handle it. If things start going backward again i see alot of companys going under and not just trucking.
