We worked on trip planning and map reading this past week in my class. Out of about 30 people I got the only A grade. 2 people got a B, a few others got a C, most got a D, and about 10 got an F.

Looks like truck GPS units are going to be flying off the shelves when this bunch hits the big time.

Make sure those GPS units are updated with 2012 maps... some of these GPS dont tell you Low Bridges or Bridge Weights or Boulavards...

I don't knock people that use them but I hate a GPS. I've tried them and just couldn't make myself like them. I guess I'm just set in my ways. I like to sit down with my atlas and note pad and plan my trip. When I say i like I mean just that. I actually enjoy it.

That by no means is just somthing rookies do. I see it all the time from drivers that claim they have plenty of experience.

I like to use an atlas also. I'm going to say work ethic, get off your lazy ### and get to WORK. Don't be too lazy to shower, too lazy to pre-trip, too lazy to check your jaws on your fifth wheel, etc. Put your nose to the grindstone, run your ### off and pay attention to the road and not your cell phone, gps, and whatever else ive seen people doing as they drive, and you'll do just fine.

I like sitting down with my atlas and planning my trip out too and I still write my directions on my windshield. I do have a gps and use mainly at night. What I like about it is that it tells me how far my turn is so at night when I can't see the signs as well I'm not slowing down at every street trying to read them. If you rely on the gps only you will get screwed but it can be a useful tool in ways.

As far as the rookie thing goes just admit your a rookie. Don't try to impress anyone if you don't know something don't pretend you do. If it takes you 15 mins. to park then take 15 mins. You will be safer and happier as a dumb rookie then as a know it all rookie.
