Well here's the thing about all of those shows. They're shows. Which means they're scripted. Which means they're fake.
Storage Wars? The auctions aren't real and all of the contents of the lockers are planted. I suspect the antiques pickers show is the same deal. By the time they show up, they've already found and bought the junk. Then they plant the stuff, and come in and shoot the segment.
So I would strongly suspect that pretty much everything on this new shipping wars show is pre-arranged. IOW the reason Ripley's was on the show was not because they happened to call U-ship. It was because they were approached by the producers of the show and because they probably paid the show to be involved and have their name used. The item being shipped was secondary and incidental.
And I would suspect the items being shipped by non-commercial clients are also all 100% planted and/or pre-arranged by the producers. The producers decide who is going to haul what and when and where. And they also probably decide what is going to go wrong on the way.

I have a pal in the hotshot business...yes hes making a living hes hooked up with one main customer a couple of small customers on the side he started with junk equipment trying to run under the radar ..I kept telling him thats not the way to go it wont work..running under the radar within 150 miles of the house is one thing running under the radar 1000 miles from home is another..but he had to find out the hard way..now he has new equipment and is legal with all his own authority...like I say he is making a living ..I would not do what he has to do to make a living...get a phone call at 0900 they say you need to pick a load up in 2 hours and be 750 miles from here at 0800 tomorrow...been there and done that when I started in 89...I wont do it again..but he is in so deep he has to do it now...Ive heard hot shot was a real deal in the begginnig...now its just like trucking with a smaller truck...too many cut throat guys running under the radar willing to work for enough to buy fuel and nothing else...in this day and age people look at price not service...its sad but true....aint truckin fun!

How are you going to compete with guys who run broken equipment, no insurance, no registration, bid loads under cost and get financed by their parents?
-
load boards like u-ship are fine to get back hauls but not a primary source of loads. i have hauled some loads off that site. people bid so cheap on there there is no real profit in there loads. i did ok off a few over size loads from load boards when i was running hotshot. but the best use for that site is iv say you already have a load going to ca. you need to get to WY. for your next load, pickup a couple atv's or whatever haul it for the price of fuel and then pickup your next real load. i did make a couple contacts off the site in question hauled a load as a back haul for a guy and then ended up doing 6-7 more loads for the same guy over the following 2 years.

And folks this is the reason rates are so cheap!!!
There is no such thing as a back haul! Running for fuel money is stupid!
No offense, but your part of the problem in this industry! -
you have to have your round trip fuel mileage calculated into your initial load, if your traveling empty and find a way to fill it to offset the cost of running empty even at a diminished rate from it only makes sense and increases profits by a large percentage. this in my opinion is the reason for load boards anyone trying to operate entirely off a load board i pity.

I very rarely work off of a broker board like CH Robinson, but when I do, I don't haul for a loss and running for fuel money is just that.

This is great gotta love Shipping Wars for giving me the idea.
Look what the guys at American Pickers found for me.

The guys at American Restoration is going to restore it for me while I am working out to the Biggest Loser show so I can fit in the cab. Then I am going to hit the Shipping War band wagon with this trailer.

and maybe I can contact the guys at Moonshiners, Storage Wars, Weed Wars etc..... for loads.
I think the only problem I am going to have is finding a bank big enough to put all the money I am going to make in my Mini Trucking Bizness. U Go U Ship!

I bid on loads on uship once in a while but rarely win one because some broker or guy with no insurance or athority will come in and low ball it. The guys bidding and winning jobs for fuel money will be gone fast. Theres no such thing in my operation a a back haul or running for a fuel money rate. Every load has to make me a profit or i will run back empty. uship could be a good site if they got rid of all the illleagal guys bidding on loads but to use it as a main source for finding loads would not work out.
As far as the show its a joke, a guy running oversize boats from coast to cost with a dually weighing 35k for $7,600 unreal. -
Thanks for all the sarcasm. I hope you guys are better drivers than you are comedians. The show simply got me moving on the subject. I've thought about getting my own authority for years and couldn't decide on what type of vehicle, A,B or C..and was looking for suggestions and constructive input. To those who got that and gave me those constructive comments, I thank you. To the Comedians, it's open mike nite somewhere, give it a shot, you have talent! (Sarcasm)
