Rates have been soft. But there seems to be plenty of freight, at least in my area. I have a friend in a different part of the country and he has been having a much more difficult time of it. He pulls a van. He usually finds decent paying loads where he runs. It is mostly the time of year. Things will begin to turn around in a few weeks. -
That's why I left dry van. Everyone and their brother can buy a 53 and learn how to be a door slammer with little capital or skill. The more capital and skill it takes to break in to the market, the more money the base rate will be. I've got a buddy with a 55 ton rgn, triaxle with a stinger. He might dead head it for $2 a mile, but it would never have a load on it for under $5.
-
Yeah, tell me about it. My good 2 trips here that work me towards the house come up to a grand total of $1.94 to my truck all miles on 1043. My optimism about mapquest routing me home without taking a hit on that was off target as well, I'll lose another 20 cents a mile for going home. It's that or kill a whole weekend in the truck, which I really don't want to do. Even so, I'm still optimistic that things are going to change for the better long term, even with crappy dry van, as more and more brokers/shippers are held to account for negligence.

i have lost alote of shippers in the last year texas is crazy i was in houston wednesday every load i called on the line was busy or was put on hold just to hear the load was gone all the old post were tarp loads that paid $1.65 or less a mile pipe loads $1.50 a mile i did a landstar load of crain parts out of south houston paid $2.10 a mile for a stepdeck just going to baton rouge but it got me the hell out of there
So out of the 20 times a day i ask for more money i dont get any maybe $100 they have already had 10 calls on the load your calling about -
with that kind of thinking where do you stop? today you hauling your "backhaul" at 1.10, that means tomorrow when there's nothing else your "backhauling" at .80 cause that's all there is, and you have "stay in the black"
just sounds like a really good way to go out of business if you ask me. -
Good post on the thread. From what I have noticed there are good rates goin in and crap coming out, when in the summer they are up. Brokers know this which is why the drop rates in most of the good lanes. They know we have to move to another area. I don't think you can put all the blame on the o/o. I'm all for sayn no to cheap freight,I'm deadheading 300+ miles today to a better area..
-
We have always had rate cycles in this business. Rates are usually better in summer months and lower during winter. There are also areas where rates are typically better and others where they are normally cheaper. We have also had those who will take the cheap rates no matter what they pay. That is why rates continue to be cheap.
-
Well you think brokers cut the rates in the winter time?
He'll no they don't
I did a load for TQL last week the guy gave me a price on a 130 mile run that woul put me in a better place he told me it was paying $300 told him he was nuts he ask me what I could do it for I said $550 first thing he said I don't have that in it than ask if I was set up I said ya and gave him my mc than he said O your file looks goods with us yes I can do the $550 WTF? Well I'm hear to tell you they did not take a loss just to move it -
TQL is always cheap. Couple weeks ago wanted to put me on load close to home, he had me wait two days then cancelled. I don't wait on none of them anymore.
