I recently applied for a job using an online application.
As such, the recruiter got my email addy.
When I called back to follow up on my app he had some questions
about some of the posts I had made in forums like this one.
Some of my posts were not flattering to the industry.
He emailed me the very posts I made under various screen names
and forums that I never supplied in my application.
Mainly trucking forums but other stuff too.
How he did this I don't know.
He asked me why I posted certain things on certain forums and I told
him it was none of his friggin business...that it had nothing to do with
the job.
A lot of paper applications now ask you for your email addy.
From now on I will leave that space blank.
Or better yet, tell the recruiter I don't have a PC at all.
I would advise you all to do the same.
Be wary about giving your email addy to recruiters

Did he ask if you were really an alcoholic like Barney from the Simpsons?
-
Yep, it's a hard fact: If you're going to post something on the internet, be sure it's something you don't mind anybody being able to find. In this age of information, it's all too easy to do research on someone.
I remember a while back a grade school teacher was fired for posting pics of her drinking alcoholic beverages at some party, IIRC, on her Facebook page. -
I have a yahoo e-mail address that I use for any paperwork that asks for an e-mail address.
My real e-mail address is only given to those whom I wish to have it.Lonesome Thanks this. -
You must have posted your email address somewhere and he did a search on that. It will show up just like a company name does. Then it's just connect the dots for Inspector Clousteau. I googled werner trainer crap and guess what comes up?
TTR! and all posts including those words. F-M anyway! It's protected speech, at least until NDAA section 1031 is signed suspending Habeas Corpus and allowing military troops to arrest and detain you indefinitely without a trial for "Suspicion of Terrorist Activities" or some other nonsense. Oh....my bad.....Obama actually signed that Jan. 1st, 2012. Well then, you'd better watch what you say.(puts tinfoil hat back on)......Shhh....they might be listening......... -
I just did a search of my e-mail address (addy) and I came up with nothing concerning me personally.
Not even a hint.
And, I don't have multiple 'addy's'.
addy
Is it so hard to type address?
Maybe one of you can snag my addy and tell me something about myself that I don't like.Gizmo_Man Thanks this. -
I did as well a few different forums but bah I have 2 and if your that worried might as well put on that tin hat
-
Sign up for a free hotmail account or some bogus yahoo account and just use that for this sorta stuff. Never post online with legit emails...

I recently filled out an online pre-app for a well known carrier.
As such, the recruiter got my email addy, etc.
When I called to follow up on my application he had
some questions about some posts I made in public
online forums like this one.
Some of my posts were not flattering to the industry.
After all, this is trucking -- not the U.S. State Dept.
From my email addy & IP he was able to access any post I had made
online under various screen names, forums, etc.
Some forums I had visited were trucking related while others were not.
He asked me why I posted certain views online.
I told him it was still a free country and that my personal views on
other subjects had nothing to do with the job.
He seemed to think otherwise.
Would you consider this an invasion of privacy or no??
I think this can be more damaging than your DAC report.
Many paper applications ask you for your email addy today.
Any recruiter can then potentially get ahold of everywhere
you've been online whether it's trucking related or not.
A keen word of advise...don't fill out any online apps.
Have them send you one in the mail.
And if they ask you for your email tell them you don't have one.Last edited: Jan 21, 2012

Interesting. I've heard of companies that do pretty intense social networking checks, but not in the trucking industry.
It is not an invasion of privacy, because it is information you posted publicly and therefore with no expectation of privacy. I certainly understand your frustration with it though, because it doesn't seem like you should be judged on it. I got a stern talking to recently because of some comments I made to a friend regarding driving a vehicle off a cliff. It was a long-standing joke between us. Basically that the only way to get a new ambulance would be to drive our current one off a cliff. We certainly were never serious, and it was just that typical "around the water cooler" BS. Apparently some people didn't view it that way.
Another option would be to create a second "professional" E-mail if you will and only use that for work-related things (applications, communication with employer, etc), and then not provide your personal email. Thanks for the heads up and the reminder...
