Well, let me jump in with another slant on this:
Being a trucker doesn't mean you can't be local. There are a lot of local jobs that may require a CDL, but you have to ferret them out.
With a local job, you will be home nightly.
Often these are delivery jobs with local manufacturing companies. They may have a Class B straight truck. My younger brother got his CDL and landed a job with a local propane company immediately. Drove a straight truck for a few months before they trained him on the tractor/trailer. Never a night away from home.
The jobs are out there, but you have to look.
If you are getting your license and being paid for by a grant, then go for it.
But under NO CIRCUMSTANCES go OTR!
An OTR's life is just not congruent with a young family. There will always be OTR later. It will never go away.

Would probably be a big mistake to go into any trucking job at this time. To go with Stevens is going to require a time investment of 3 months of "School", before you are out on your own, in your own truck. Taking time off at your child's birth, will only come back to bite you in the long run.
What are you going to do, come home for a day or two? I should think you owe your girlfriend more than that.
Truck driver's with small children is a terrible combination. You can say, well it happens in the military, but this job is not forced. A lot of people do it, but i ask why?
The trucking industry is not the "FIX" for the unemployment situation. You would be better off moving to a locale with employment opportunities and finding a job that doesn't require you to be away from home as much.

    Just my opinion.

Finally was dispatched. And it looks like a punishment load for being a safe driver and refusing to drive yesterday. Oh well. Pick up in ottawa DLD 2100 today, 4 drops, two in harrisburg monday, one in new jersey on tuesday and final north side of NYC tuesday.

Guard says check back about 4pm should be ready.

No weather shutdown here which was surprising considering the foot of snow we got. Anyways, I'm getting a repower that delivers in MD @ 3am and then VA at 10pm tomorrow, and it's already got a preplan attached.

Infamous...can't give you any advice on this end as everybody else has already given it.

I understand you have to train studesnt to back up..... but why in the world would you do it in a spot that blocks the exiting patrons from the fuel islands, the entrance and all of the parking spaces, make a ###### line sitting on the road?? I always take my student to the back of the truck stop and practice there the first week for 1 hour a day before we attempt clogging stuff up...... have some courtesy already.

No No, they have to have that spot! It's a 70 yard walk from the back parking lot and that is just too far to walk for greasy pizza.:biggrin_2554:

Honestly, the responses I heard wasn't something I wanted to hear... but HAD to hear. I would've rather heard what I didn't want to hear, than hear what I wanted to, and regret it in the long run. All were some good advice, and will definitely consider the local trucking run opportunities.

I will tell everyone that, even jobs such as McDonalds, delivering pizza, all of the fast food restaraunts where I reside at are flooded with applications worse than the unemployment office so those are out of the question to say the least because with the job market being the way it is, everyone goes to the "bottom of the barrel" and puts in at the one place everyone may think there's opportunity. I know because I have a few friends in management positions at the local McDonalds and Pizza Hut and say they stay receiving applications on a daily basis.

Maybe I'll give it another year before I jump into the trucking business. That'll give me some time with my son/daughter and at the very least, finish my college degree this fall.

    Thanks everyone for the feedback.
