hey diesel you will have to go back to school it will be cheaper for you. when you get out of school your company will pay you back for your tuition up to so much but they will not pay you back for a refresher course. just a thought! thats what i had to do.

I started this gig in 1972 when my two youngest wern't toilet trained yet. I did line haul which got me home 2-3 nights per week.
Saw my kids growing up and decided I needed to be home more.
Then after 4 years, I got a gig pulling a dairy tanker. Out one night per week.
Did that for 8 years.
Then Max talked me into buying my first truck. I still haven't forgiven him.
But over the years, I amassed 14 trucks and 12 drivers.
I was home quite a bit.
I never regreted being home.
When you are old and on your deathbed, you won't be wishing you had taken 'one more trip' over the road. You will regret you didn't stay home to watch your family grow up.
Mine is long grown. Youngest is 34. My oldest grandson just got married.
If there is one bit of advice I can give a younger driver with a family: don't go OTR!
There will always be time later to do it...just like TLea, myself and many others.
And we don't do it for the money. (at least I don't)
We do it because we WANT to. It's a lifestyle. And for people like me, it gets in your blood.
But never put the job before your family.
Never!DenaliDad, Dieselten77, Corporal_Clegg and 2 others Thank this. -
Those are exactly the reason I left professional aviation. After missing first recitals, first birthdays, first graduations, first...well, a whole lot of firsts, I decided that making a ton of money just wasn't worth it. That's why I left and went to the FAA and stayed 27 years.
Trucks will always be there. That first dance recital, that first prom, those one-on-one talks with your daughter or son...they will not. Make the right move. Don't put your dream of driving before your family. Please.Dieselten77 and TRKRSHONEY Thank this. -
Got the 1st drop done in MD early this am. I'm about 30 min from my 10 being up so I can head to VA, and I get a nice qualcomm message "YOU ARE GOING TO REPOWER A NYC LOAD FROM A G1 TRUCK. CALL IN FOR YOUR NYC TALK!" I am?? That's news to me. Nice way to ASK! As a matter of fact, I feel like going to VA this evening. Plus this load has a preplan attached...something I'm not really wanting to give up. So no...I'm not going to NYC because a G1 is scared. Find somebody else.
I have no idea what the preplan is or where it picks up or delivers because the weekend monkeys have not sent it to me...but my dm said it had one attached. -
I hate to interject with everyone giving such good info, just an update on the debt. If you last the length of your 1 year commitment you still owe over $5000, the starting debt is around $7200-$7400, I don't have my paperwork readily available. Maybe one of the more recent grads can give more specific figures.TLeaHeart and Dieselten77 Thank this.

Some great discussion here. I like reading everyones thoughts on OTR. I also strongly erge anyone who really want to be a trucker, find a community college to get your training. And you may get financial aid also.
Now flight a G1 can not deliver into new york city. And the weekend crew figures you won't say no. If you are on time you may say no.
Truckershoney I was going with costs from 4 years ago. The numbers that stay are from last november. Thanks for the current costs.
Stopped in carlisle delivery is 12 miles away in the morning. I sure do hope that the ice storm decides to move a little more east. Light and hit or miss is the forcast.TRKRSHONEY and Dieselten77 Thank this. -
They also told us that until just a couple of years ago, if you completed your 1 year contract the rest of the debt was forgiven. Not so anymore. It will take about 3 1/2 years to completely pay it off if you stay with Stevens.Dieselten77 Thanks this.

Let me make a few small corrections, paperwork in hand, recent graduate. It is 3600 if paid off within a year. 5400 if paid off over 2 years and 7800 if it takes you longer than 2 years.
Been a hard week for me, barely making miles but burning a lot of hours at dock. Finally got a load out of California after a week spent in the produce circle. Headed to Los Lunas to Walmart and then who knows.
I Do miss my girls and though it has only been 4 months I feel like I have missed so much. I started all this in hopes to find a local gig after the loan is paid off and contract is fulfilled. The more I look into local jobs driving the more I realize that the magic number is 2. All the local routes want you to have 2 years otr experience before you are even considered.
I was touched my all the thoughts of being home for fam....having a rough moment right now, better go get lost in my book. Miss my family today!!!TLeaHeart and Dieselten77 Thank this. -
Shifty, are they still setting you up to pay $26.84 per week and they match your payment??? 4 months is a long long time to be away from fanily, do you have a laptop on the truck so you can Skype with them???
-
.
Shifty, I have been looking the past couple of days. I dont know about your part of the country but here in Texas there are alot of local jobs that will take 6 months OTR experience.
I have a phone interview tomorrow for a regional job and have filled out 2 applications that I have a good feeling about.
Im sorry, but I have had too many pay checks below $100!!! I do have bills to pay!Shiftylots and TRKRSHONEY Thank this.
