a big part of the problem is that the vast majority of the labor pool has a terrible work ethic. So it doesn't matter how well you pay, what the equipment is, or how you treat them. Like the old computer saying, garbage in garbage out. If only more of today's youth could be forced to experience farm type labor or other similar work environment, it might help. Growing up on TV and video games might be great for controlling a military drone, but not so good for other real world jobs.

It may work for a while under limiting conditions. Staying small and 'family owned'; will work. When the company goes public; the Genie is out of the bottle. No insurance will NOT work. Oh; you'll get drivers but you won't get any of the 'cream'.

Not all that unusual. My family has been in the trucking business likely longer than anyone on this forum has been alive and I doubt that many (if any) have a longer family history in the business. However, I started my company in '05 and my brother started trucking about 3-4 years ago. Neither company has any connection to my grandfathers company. Our family seems to have diesel running through our veins but I guess we are just an independent lot.

I worked for a fairly small company for around 4 years-good equipment, good miles, good hometime, owner was (I kid you not) somewhat manic-depressive. Well, that was my diagnosis, and I am not a doctor, of course. But some weeks, I was God's gift to the company and trucking in general, then the next week I was running over nails intentionally, just to get flat tires.

But the great thing was that I always knew that the owner (s) knew what trucking was like, because they would every once in awhile do a run themselves, when necessary. They KNEW what driving was like.

To be completely open, I quit only when they went from Internationals to Volvos, and cut the trucks from 82 to 67. Silly reason, maybe, but there you go. (And, yeah, now I am driving a 63 mph truck for a mega carrier. Go figure)

    edit reason: spelling

Tazz, let me start by saying that perhaps my title was a bit off. I guess what I'm looking for is more of a consensus than a poll. Please pardon the poor choice of words.

Second, the reason I am going into business without the rest of my family is A. My Grandfather (former flatbedder) is 86 years old, and not of age to be doing much anymore. B.His brother, my great uncle is an O/O and has no desire to work with/for me. No hard feelings, he just likes where he's at now.

Third, I'm not looking to recruit drivers. I will have two trucks on the road within the week and both driving positions are filled. The purpose of this post was to get an idea of what other drivers would think about working for a company like mine. Would they like the idea of being encouraged to exhibit traits like honor, integrity and so forth? Are you sure who John Galt is? I am. Maybe you should take another crack at Atlas Shrugged, if you have even read it to begin with.

Well if your full up why bother questioning the obvious? Remedial exercise at best. Forgive me if it has been my experience that there is a direct proportion to when someone speaks of their honor and integrity along with wrapping themselves in the bible and the flag and when they will screw someone over. Everyone's experience may vary but that is mine. Further that anyone seeking an opinion of what is obvious to a logical and moral man has a hidden agenda. Again people may believe otherwise but that has been proven to me repeatedly.

If your starting your business on that basis of honor and integrity (most moral men will demand those as a constant in all their dealings) as I stated good drivers will find you. If you are as I suspect my second statement holds true as well.

I will answer your question though it reveals further my thought's on your character.Yes I am aware of whom John Galt is. As well as Howard Roark, Equality 7-2521, Dagny Taggert,Gale Waynard, Freedom 5-3000.........

They are all fictional characters written by Ayn Rand. I place that in my signature in the hopes people will research it and producers will follow the logic of letting the looters and thieves have their world. I also take the oath Ms. Rand penned in Atlas Shrugged, not as some scripture to be blindly repeated like the fantasies christians spout, but to honor myself and my right to life.

I do hope that satisfies your questions why I would place a fictional character in my signature.

I work for the company you just described. Actually I feel more as though I work with them and am sure the feeling is mutual. O/O only. Unfortunately, while you may create just the same company, I'm afraid your expectations of company drivers are way too high. Then mentality is not the same with employees. They have no skin in it, very little incentive, and just don't care. They get mad and frustrated with ordinary every day normal things in trucking then take it out on you or your equipment. You want to create this company by looking for likeminded o/o who want to build something like that along with you. Keep everything in the open and always be honest. Pay a fair percentage. Do what you say you will.
