So I have been checking out companies, planning for the future so to speak. Sometimes I see the option to take percentage pay or cpm. What are the benefits and downfalls of each? Incidentally the one I was really interested in was a refridgerated route from jersey to central IL.

% normally pays more depending on % and what you have to pay out as far as plates ins. tolls,permits,ect. you also have to work for someone that you can trust to give you the honest rate and not scam off the top,,,,,,,,

i have always worked % and never worked cheap miles including running empty -
I got paid cpm when I first started out. Now I get paid percentage of the load. When all is said and done, it amounts to about the same thing: time is not taken into consideration for base pay. So, it depends on the route and the company.
You can equate the two. If you take how much you are getting paid in percentage, and divide the miles of the route, it will give you the cpm they will pay you, minus all the add-ons, like waiting time and such.

Yeah. Talked with one of their drivers a couple months ago and he seemed genuinely happy with the company. We were eating and he saw an ad for his company in the trucker news. I liked what he had to say and actually had to chase him to his truck to get a referral card from him. He said he didn't want me to think he was pushing the company just to get a referral.
Figured I can check them out at least.

I worked for 3 different companies in the 14 years I had my own truck and flatbed. When I was looking for a new company to go to I automatically ruled out any company that paid mileage. If you learn and work the system, you will make a lot more money. My best week about 5 years ago was $9200, and I went home every weekend. That was an actual week of work, not including half of the week before like a lot of guys do to make it sound good. I made about $170,000 that year. You can't make that kind of money on mileage pay.

Well I'm a pretty new driver so I'm still learning the ropes and it may be a while before I get my own truck, though that is my goal. As a former business owner I prefer being an o/o rather than just an employee. There is just so much to learn it's staggering....taxes, authority or lease, ifta, brokers, paid miles, fuel surcharges, maintenance and fuel mileage and the list goes on and on. The next person I hear utter the words "dumb trucker" is gonna get a punch in the nose.

Gravdigr, how about an LTL job where you can go home every night and dont have to worry about creeps like me hitting on your old lady at the truck stops?

Sounds tempting, but after 4 days of my hometime the road calls. Right now my job doesn't feel like work. I'm afraid if I get a day job I'm just going to be driving the same places every day and get bored. I'm pretty new and there is a lot out there I haven't seen yet. Home weekends would be plenty for me. I just gotta find something that pays better and doesn't have me driving the POS I have now. The 07 freightshaker would be ok if I was allowed to add some stuff to it but the company won't allow it.
