Anyone replace the valve stems in a rim (without the tire shop doing it) ?
And if so, how tight is tight? - Cant get a torque wrench in there of course...

I got a new set of rims and they came with installed valve stems
but when I put a box wrench on it, they weren't as tight as I had expected.
In fact, while they weren't loose enough to turn the stem, they weren't tight.

I put some decent solid tightness on them (using a 6" wrench) but was wondering what anyone else did?

..seems to me the spec is like 10ft-lbs which seems way too low :biggrin_25524: ?

I just do like I do most other things....just snug it up. If it snaps, ya done snugged it up too much.:biggrin_25523:

Seriously, though...just tighten it up until the valve stem won't spin in the hole in the rim. If the nut is on the inside of the rim, I'd snug it up a hair more....if it's on the outside, you can put a wrench on it without breaking down the tire if it happens to leak once it's all together, so it isn't AS important to make sure you get it tight enough before you get the tire mounted.

If you're looking for an exact torque measurement, though, I couldn't tell you. I've got 2 or 3 torque wrenches people have given me over the years....can't remember the last time I even put my hand on one of 'em. I figure the torque wrench ain't gonna do me a lick of good if I don't know what I'm supposed to be torquing the fastener to....

    Hanadarko Thanks this.

I would suggest you use the the TFAR method (That Feels About Right) over the German method (Gutentight) as the German method may be overkill.

Handarko, if you don't mind my asking, what brand of rims did you buy Alcoa or Accuride's? And what kind price did you get on them? 22.5 or 24.5? I may have to get a couple of new ones for my steers in about another year or so.

Accuride 24.5 Machine finish....I got 'dealer' pricing but regular price from my other supplier would have been about $290 each....

When my Volvo was new, from the factory all the inside valve stems drives leaked from being loose. I carry a stubby wrench just for that now!

They only need to be tight enough so any brute sticking a gauge or chuck on them won't move them.

They are just brass. So, they'll strip easy.
