sorry i've been away, the number should be a 5, as that was what came out on 05's, but they put in a rebuilt engine. we looked on it and cannot see any number, but we can't get to all of it, the other side of it could have it, but we can't get to it. we don't know if they kept the original one to the truck or if a different one came with the rebuilt engine.

possible connection issue or faulty low voltage module!as your ecm is resetting itself as if you were turning the key off and on.also if your power piont plugs in the cab quit it would lead towards lvm.just bypass the lvm for a while to see if problem goes away[hook up both big cables together]

well to update, we are sitting around getting no where fast. The shop where we work is not interested in even looking or try to diagnose our problem. we can't drive anywhere. as the truck stalls out as soon as it warms up. we were given advice to check our batteries which we did, and one was bad so we replaced all four, cause they were all old. that didn't help, went to minot and bought 2 sensors, the techs there were very reserved in talking to us, but did say that only water and oil sensors shut a truck down. the coolant level sensor was replaced going about 3 weeks ago, so we bought coolant temp sensor, put it on today, did not help, tried to put on oil pressure sensor but it looks complicated to get to, and got dark out, will try later today after daylight comes to get it on. yes we know we are throwing parts at it. but freightliner in minot cannot get us in until feb 7 and that will include a tow bill. some say that is like 2000 bucks. we need to work. everyday that goes by is costing us. anyone know a mechanic who can come to us? lol huh, I know thats a joke. we kinda think its related to the ecm or grounding wiring, or harness. but we arent mechanic's. or maybe related to fuel intake, air in it or voltage in ecm sensors etc. Like I said we aren't mechanics and don't have the diagnostick tools to find out these things. Saying my prayers and hope we get oil pressure sensor on and it works, if hubby can get it on. Thanks to everyone for your help and ideas. Thats a lot more than any of these mechanic's have had.

It may be your ignition switch itself!! I have had it happen before! or the ground in dash at buss connection. You will never get a CODE for a BAD GROUND!! but the clues you gave like radio resetting FIND out where radio grounds
    IS it at ignition switch!?
    Keep us posted

update, got a mechanic to put oil pressure sensor in yesterday, he also found a ground on battery that was corroded, cleaned connections. It looked like it was healed, could rev up to 2200 rpm, but when we took it out on road it derated again with check engine light coming on then letting off it went off. then we parked it in just a few it stalled out. told mechanic, he now thinks it may well be the ecm harness, or a ground, told him about ground to ignition, he was like "could be". He does not have the diagnostic tools here to check it all, so it looks like we gotta wait for the feb 6 appt with freightliner, and the tow into there. we are s--t outta luck for now.

Can you look at the ECM and see what it is. If this truck came with a DDEC 5 and they put a 3 or 4 in it then they would have had to rewire a good bit of stuff. Heck if it was a five or a 4 and they put in a 3 ECM then some stuff may not work at all.

If you have a 4 then try and find a shop that will put on a test ECM (a 4) and see what happens. Electrical problems suck.

    1) post your ECM on here.
    2) check grounds at battery box. You may even need to remove the main grounds from the frame and clean them up and score/scratch the area where these ground are. Some times you may even have to install a new ground away from the old area.
    3) Make sure if there are any small ground wires around the batter box that they are hooked up and clean.
    4) start shaking the wiring harnesses.
    5) Try a test ECM If you got a 254 code you need to see what the FMI code was. I think if you have a 254 FMI 12 then the ECM is bad.

If active code 254/12 is logged, and no other codes are logged, hook up a test ECM. If code clears, replace the ECM. If code is not cleared, contact Detroit Diesel Tech Service.
Good luck and PLEASE post any solution(s) so others may benefit in the future.

it is the common ground that controls the sensors. engine wire harness ground.

update, well we can get the truck to idle without stalling out now. Today we actually drove it to Minot to freightliner. We could get it up to 50/55 mph, but on hills it would get down to 35, stalled out once on the way over. can't take going over 1200 rpms without wanting to drop down again. They will get to it Monday morning, sure hope they can figure this one out, told them about your ideas and asked them to read this thread to see what its been doing and what your ideas are. will let u all know what we find out, when we find out. thanks for your help
