I don't think WD40 works anymore. I think they changed the formula a little bit. My guess is bad compression rings.

My experience with bad rings would be very hard starting, but also a significant lack/loss of power when up to a good operating temp. If hard starting is the only symtom and power doesn't seem to be compromised, then look elsewhere. Loss of fuel pressure due to air sucking is my guess.

Also, as noted, wd40 is no longer flammable, so easy on the either.

I have used Gasoline on a rag and spread the rag over the intake and that works, I have used propane with a tiger torch not lit, I have sprayed gasoline into the air filter housing left it for a minute then started it.
I use to start trucks in the winter in Edmonton and what I did was crank it for 10 seconds, add a little gas into the filter, wait 1 minute and do it again, if it does not start do the same thing again any longer than 15 seconds cranking you are waisting your batteries.
We had a few air start Big cam Cummins, if you did not get it the first time you had to tow it into the shop, on those I use to remove the air filter and put the Gas right into the filter and assemble it then start them.
    Just a thought!

I use syringe with low octane gas to start up engine. Better the ether

We have an old military generator on a trailer. Right now it's out at the training range next to two old 94 Volvos with the 60 series Detroits. They really don't need very much quality time with the block heater to fire up without issues. I've also used one of those little Honda generators for camping. They will run some of the block heaters without tripping. Block heaters rock. I take out my pyro tendancies on bonfires, avoiding air intakes, and leave the ether in the can on the shelf.
