When you think of it. You can buy a pre 2004 EGR truck fairly cheap and have a mechanic go thru it and replace just about everything cheaper then you could buy a glider and basically have the same effect.
Actually, if one is careful to consider what he is buying, this all could be done over the course of a couple years and you would end up with exactly what you want, a new truck.

True, but you could also get another man's problem child. A good mechanic will not be able to tell if the ring gear on the diff is about to go without tearing the diff apart, as an example.
And the full factory warranties, part of a glider purchase, would not be the case with a used ride. And when you consider all the normal maintenance stuff like tires, brakes, etc that go on with a used truck within roughly 3 years that you would not have with a new glider, it really is comparing apples to oranges.
Used is not a bad option in many cases. It really depends on the operation and the owner. Once in a while, that well maintained and driven used truck presents itself. In that case, it would be harder to justify a new glider purchase.
You also have to factor in what you need in a truck and what used is available. The pool of available good, used trucks gets pretty small if your operation is not basic general freight like the normal big carrier stuff and running only the interstate highways. You have to take the spec's as they are or invest in replacing components.
Generally, in limited circumstances, you would be correct. -
I am not building a glider to save money. If I could find a used truck speced the way I wanted it with low miles I would have went that route, I still may. I dont think I will find what I am looking for, that and I dont want a truck I have to work on every week.

There is a big difference in what you got listed as a price and what DL's price is. You are getting a motor and rears for $105,000 and DL is just getting rears for $95,000.
BTW what kind of truck are you specing out.
I'm not busting on you for what your doing, I'd do it too if I was looking for a new truck. I'm just more pissed that Paccar is basically taking advantage of people building these now.
IF you go thru with this keep all invoices pertaining to how it was built and by who. If you ever go to sell it, you'll need them, but in the end the famous last words of a potential buy or dealer will be....."It's a Glider". -
The trouble with the glider is Pa. is going to give it a reconstructed title getting it financed through a bank might be a problem. I have yet to check with mine, although it was approved through the dealer with GE.
When I had my Mac built I was told that its resale wont be very good as its only 42 ft long. My response is the same. I am not specing it for someone else.

10 years ago "It's a glider" may have been a deal breaker. But with all the new junk on the market now, it's a plus. Unless it's been cobbled together in someones driveway.
Oh hey DL550CAT, check to see if the price your getting includes the chip you have to wear on your shoulder if you drive a Pete.
$95k seems like a lot of money for a truck put together with the scraps dug out of the dumpster at the KW plant.

No offense taken, I just want you to understand what they are gonna say. Trust me I know, I own a glider and a 45x96 wagon, screw resale!
You know how dealers are, anything to get the price down but as soon as it hits the lot, its a hot truck and they want an arm and a leg for it. -
If KW built them I would have started this process along time ago. Its taken me 3 months to get used to the idea of not owning a KW. I must admit I like the looks of the interior of the new Petes better than the new KWs and thats what I'll see the most of. I drive alot at night so maybe no one will see me driving a Pete.

I think your missing my point. What I was talking about was basically replacing everything that was old with new parts. I do see your point about warranty however. I guess it would depend on the cost to basically make it a new truck compared to a glider.
