I'm thinking of going back to work driving. I have driven on and off for 20 years for a friend. Haven't driven for 6 months. How do I get started again as a company driver? Most companys are telling me I don't qualify as a professional driver because of my on & off driving for 20 years. I did fill in work as a favor for a friend & because I was also raising my kids at the time. Does this mean I will be treated as if I never had any experience and have to start all over again? Does anybody have any suggestions of what to do?![]()

The problem for you is that you were driving on and off and was not consistently working for any other employer. Every company I know about wants you to have at least a year or two steady behind the wheel you can find some small local outfits that are family owned that aren't as picky as the bigger companies but the money is usually alot lower and the equipment isn't great either. another option you could look at is heartland express they offer refresher driving jobs check them out. Or try to find a company that will let you drive with a trainer for a few weeks. my opinion is u should stay away from the wheel period. I myself have been driving a little under 5 years and trucking isnt all it was cracked up to be the money isnt great with the exception of a certain few companies, and with the hours and time spent away from the family it just doesn't add up.
i wish I would of explored other options before hand trucking is a complete let down not even to mention if u god forbid get in an accident or a ticket. urrrrrrrrrrrrrr outta hereeeeeeeee. good luck dude i wish u the best. -
Basically, yes you will be looked at as a noob. Been there done that

Tough to swalllow, but you can get past it.
An issue that would be of concern for me. Are they asking for a school cert? If so, it will cost you.
Just keep looking around, you'll eventually find something. -
How much experience in the last 3 years is what will be the most important. For instance if you have 1.5 years in the last 3 most companies will work with you. You said you havent driven in 6 months.... How long did you drive before that? Thats pretty recent by my standards. Also if you have a friend with a small construction company. He could always say you hauled equipment for him on a lowboy within the local multistate area. I know a very good driver who did that, and NO honesty is not always the best policy.
