a couple of questions re the DOT physical. I've been reading the forum and searching it as well and haven't been able to find the answers so any help would be appreciated.
First, I read through the DOT physical form and it asks about having asthma, which i have been diagnosed with some 20 yrs ago. it's not a major thing, might us an inhaler twice a month but its on my med record.
is that an instant "fail?"
Second, recently had elbow surgery, in November. All is good but the doc did give me some pain meds, percoset and hydrocodone. i haven't taken any in a while, ibuprofen seems to be workin fine. but thinking if i'm asked i'll just be honest and have written documentation from my doc.
So, before i and quit my day job, any red flags here?
any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

the asthma will not fail you, as long as the inhaler doesnt impare you. most of them dont. The elbow, if your cleared by a doc wont hurt you, If you take the drugs when you on your 10 break you can take the meds, but you can still drive on ibuprofen. the other ones impare you abilities.your big pain killers will not disqualify you as long as they are prescribed to you. If you dont need them dont take them until after all is said unless your really need them .

Thanks for the reply much appreciated.

Uh, you might need a doctor's clearance for the inhaler. But this should not be a problem. Right now however, I would not know if you would be able to get a 1 year health card, or the standard 2 year card.
The surgeries, are NOT a problem. The meds ARE, if you are (still) using them. You will pop positive on a drug screen. So throw them away. Use Tylenol or whatever else.ewill71 Thanks this. -
You say it's on your med record, but your med record is private. I'm assuming your med record is the one your Doc has in his office, about you. No one else has access to it, so don't shoot yourself in the foot.

this guy is right, Some of the inhalers might need medical clearance . It would be better for you NOT to take the high powered pills. Some companies have "not as strict policies" on these drugs but major companies will especially for new drivers.

before you go to your trucking company I would go to your doctor and get a medical release form and a document saying that you're clear to work as a truck driver. other than that you should be good

thanks for all the info. i plan on having my release from my surgeon as well as an release from my family doc before heading to training. guess just may just some paranoia on my part.
thanks again. -
They dont know if you do not tell them. Make NO mention of the inhaler. Get off the dope before you pee test, that will flunk you big time.
Remember, that doc is there to protect his own butt, he isnt your friend. Tell them nothing. -
true, but if they have me sign a med release and they check. POW right in the kisser and back on the bus.
