Looking to spend less than $100 on a decent starter radio. Was looking at the cobra 18 lw I think it is? At 70-80. Other than that it was that midland brand at r40. Wanted to have NOAA stations on it too. Was leaning toward the cobra's.

Bringing home .27cpm at present without the best miles too. Sooo I need a cheaper cb. In the end it will serve as the backup cb when I get some better dough coming in. Also how is the stock antennaes in these trucks? Decent for my uses?

I have two cobra 29's. I believe one is a classic. All cb's only have 4 watts coming out of the box. I've had them ten years. Even if you buy a new one, you will need to take it and have it tuned and juiced up. I think mine are around 30 watts now. You might check around some of the truck stops. There are always driver selling some already souped up radios pretty cheap.
If you are driving a Cascadia, the stock antennaes s&&k.

In a Century at the moment. 2010 no less. Guess my dbl took pity on me for the problems I've run into.. even the selfimposed ones!!

Going to get the cobra 29 lsx( I think)? The anniv edition that pilot has on sale this month with the 4 color lcd display .

So how much does a "tune up" cost?

I've always saved my T/S points for a few months and got the CB free. only had 2 all my years . both Cobra 29's, peaked and tuned $10-$15. present radio is a'94 still putting out 20 watts and beat to hell. also have a Wilson 2000 antenna ,free from Wilco with points of course. and good thick cable. I don't do Pilot points they don't keep them past a month.
whats good about getting one without all echo crap ,less to go wrong. it's not needed for power just to be "cool". Me I think it sounds pretty childish, but I'm an old fart.lol

I just bought this radio yesterday at Pilot in Mobile. LOVE it. Get it, you won't regret it. Tune ups can cost as little as 25 or as much as 250...just depends.

You can get it tuned up just about anywhere. Ask the other truckers where you find a place. They usually know where the good tuners are. There are some bad cb people out there. I think I paid around $90.00. But that was 10 years ago.

Heres a quick tip and buying guide for you, Uniden makes the cobra brand, Unidens are a few dollors cheaper and if you look the same radio just differant cover, for a starter rig look at the uniden 520 its small but great, the ears make the radio.

Who told you that? Uniden is a subsidiary of Uniden Japan. Uniden makes and sells the Radio Shack brand and several cordless phone brands. They have nothing to do with Cobra. Unless they merged recently, I never heard of that??

Rat, I wouldn't get no 18. I would start with at least a Cobra 25 which is actually a decent little radio. I kept one as a back up. I had it peaked and tuned and it put out pretty good for comparible sized radio's. You read some CB forums, techs talk highly of that little radio compared to a Cobra 29. They can do more with it from what I read.

Once you get a radio, you hear at truck stops all the time, drivers sell their radio's as they quit or need money. I bought my Galaxy 959 with an Astatic mic for $60 off a driver. You hear deals like that all the time.

Pawn shops are another good source. Many times you can talk them down to half price. Pawn shops are happy to get their orignal agreement money back.

You can also check on Ebay, Amazon and Craigslist.

Not going to debate anyone hear but if you open up a cobra you will find uniden all over the inside, the only diferance is the face plate and knobs, ever notice all the controls are in the same place on the two. I worked in cb stereo shop for two years.
