I am new to this forum, but I have been reading threads here for over 2 months now. I am planning on buying a truck, and i was wondering if you guys can help me out.
The truck I am looking at is 2006 Freightliner Century XT midroof, Detroit 14L 455 HP, 10 speed, 3.55 Ratio, ,Tri Pack APU's, Headache Racks, Tool Boxes ... the truck has 850K miles on it and it is Penske lease Maintained. Asking price is $27,000.
Will it be worth buying it for $27K?

Yeah that truck is probably a year away from in-frame. I wouldn't put too much faith in leased trucks. Yeah they sell the fact that it was maintained regularly, but the folks driving those trucks generally don't care too much about them. I'd be looking for an owner's truck for ~$25-30k. The price on that FL isn't horrible, but the miles are not where i'd buy one at. Too close to needing big work. May as well find an '04 or '05 that needs the work, get it for peanuts from whoever doesn't want to mess with it, and start with a fresh engine.

Pulling Flatbed..
In one of the thread i read to get 6+ MPG pulling a flatbed, i should buy a
Aerodynamic Truck (flattop or midroof)
Detorit or Cummins Engine (470+ HP)
10 or 13 speed tranny with 3.55 gear Ratio
Drive between 63-66 Mph
Is it true? If it is, Which year truck should i buy? -
Good idea... What if i buy this truck for like $22-23K's and get the in-frame done right away? 2006 truck, fresh engine with APU unit and headache rack installed.

Pulling flatbed get an old school 6nz c15 ungoverned and keep your boost under 20 pounds, in a w900 with 3.90's I got 6.5+ doing that. If your looking at something for multi axle work get heavier rear ends.
I personally would go super 40's with 4 way lockers, 3.73 (3.90's would work as well) gears on 24.5 rubber with a 13 or 18 speed and engine of choice?6nz c15 cranked wide open in every way shape and form. 244 wheel base with the 5th wheel slid all the way forward (not sure exactly what I've gained but its significant with 7"s less truck to trailer gap) personally I hate Detroit's maybe we got an entire small fleet of lemons (10) but they're gutless unreliable and got crap for mileageabcofcric Thanks this. -
No sense in fixing what isn't broke. Maybe buy it for $22k and save for the rebuild? Run it for a couple months, sample the oil, and have the sample looked at. That should give you an idea of any fuel or wear issues. At the very least, have a full ecm report pulled for repair history and lifetime mpg, and if in doubt put it on a dyno. There's no free way to assess condition, but a lot of expensive ways to find out later that it's in poor condition.
With the 10spd and 3.55's, i'd run 60-63mph for mpg. Running heavier loads off the interstate, a 13spd would be a easier on fuel I think.
The 14L isn't a bad motor. You may want to research series 60 egr solutions, though, as problems happen across the board with it. -
Penske trucks are supposed to be well maintained, but are over priced when time comes to sell them. I would not pay $27,000 for a 6 year old truck with 850,000 miles on it. I would not pay more than $18-22,000, depending on condition. If you decide to pursue the truck, I would at least have a dyno and oil analysis done. Today, many trucks are getting over 1 million miles before needing an over haul. The more miles a truck has the closer it will be to having an over haul. I would ask to see the maintenance records and see if any engine work has been done on the truck.
Any time you buy a truck you are taking a risk. I would look for a pre emissions truck due to all the problems that have been reported from owners and drivers. Fuel mileage will also likely be greater with a pre admissions truck. I would look for an owner that wants to get out of the business or buy a newer truck. There are still deals to be had for those willing to be patient. I NEVER get in a hurry when I am looking for equipment. I usually find a good deal by taking my time.Mommas_money_maker and abcofcric Thank this. -

For $27,000, find something WITHOUT an EGR...a one-owner, owner operator's truck that has been kept up with and has paperwork documenting the maintenance that has been done.
I also prefer a 13 or 18 speed trans, but that's just me.
I would also heed all the advice given by the other folks, especially G/MAN regarding the pre-purchase inspection and checks.
