    I got my Cat "tune-up" done this morning at Kurtz's Diesel in Florence, WI. These guys did the overhaul about 1 1/2 years ago and the owner wanted me to wait 150k before he did the overhead and jakes.

    So they ran the top end, adjusted my fan belts, checked the CAC for leaks (zero!) and adjusted my brakes. That, plus 4 quarts of cetane boost, came to $251.00....

    Ya gotta love a $68.00 hour labor rate...

    Yeah the one I'm using is the same way, they charge $75 an hr.. I once saw an "overhead special" advertisedat a KW dealer one time for only... $565.00 .... that didn't include taxes nor "shop supplies"..... you justhave to shake your head at those.. :-/

    I will not have anyone but a local guy here touch my motor. Charges $72 an hour and knows his stuff. That, or I could take it to the fresh outta school kids at the stearership and pay $100+

    I use a similar small shop in Des Moines, IA for a lot of work. The guy will back up any work he does and is fair.

    Here too. $65 / hour, he's an O/O too, but came off the road and put drivers in his trucks. When our truck is in there, if he sees something that the DOT would pick apart, he calls us, and hubby can either have him fix it, or if its something that hubby can take care of, then he tells him that he will do it himself. AND he doesn't get defensive about it, when we try to save money doing some things our selves.

    I called my local Cat dealer some time ago to get a quote on the same service (before the overhaul). Craig, the shop foreman, is a really good guy and I trust him with anything. But he was gone so I talked to his minion.

    I was told it would be $550.00 plus supplies... I kinda questioned that price for an overhead on a 379. He replied "379? Oh that's $275.00... I thought you had one of those aero trucks which require an extra two hours work to just get to the engine!"...

    Do you think we could get a list of these companies slapped together? Name, city, state, labor rate, etc.?

    It'd be really nice to know which direction to limp off in when something goes out. I don't think all of the smaller shops would have websites, and I've only heard of tomes of business names and numbers printed on gold and silver in the lore of the elders.

    My local cat dealer charges $325 + tax to run the overhead. They are trustworthy good people. I know the mechanic that does it and he has done it the past 3 times it's been done. I think it's best if you let the same person always set the valves, they know the engine, do a better job looking for potential problems, and will do it the same way every time. That would be Thompson CAT in Manchester, TN. Any motor work is I belive $109.00 an hour. Any chasis work they will do at $79.00 but I only use them for overheads, and they did replace my pacbrake springs for about $300 once when I had one break on the way home one friday. Another independant shop I like is T & K Truck and Trailer Repair out of Lebanon, TN $75.00 they can fix anything, only thing they don't do is paintwork. Both shops are very professional nice folks who will do things right.
