Hi all,
I know nothing about the way the trucking industry works, and need to get 3 loaded van trailers transported from PA to SC. If someone can help me with some basic bits of info, it will be greatly appreciated.
1. How do I find a transporter?
2. Besides tires, brakes, and lights, what do I need to verify for road-worthiness? Any advice on the tires, brakes will be good too, as these have been parked for several years.
3. Legal stuff? Registration, inspections, insurance?
Thank you

Are you a business is the big question? Anything over 26,000 lbs engaged in commerce needs a commercial drivers license. Over 10,000 lbs needs at minimum a DOT medical certificate. Vehicle registration and regulations depends on GVWR and vehicles purpose.
Here's the regulations...

What you're looking for is what is called "power only". There are quite a few companies that specialize in this, as well as others that do it to reposition trucks. When I had my own company, I had some trailers moved this way as well as moved some trailers this way for others. I simply posted on a load board for mine to be moved, but I'm in the industry. Googel "power Only" and a few phone calls and you should be set if you don't get any bites from members here.
Your requirements will be to have a legal road worthy vehicle. Good tires, brakes, lights and structurally sound. They must also have a valid Federal DOT inspection within a year. On top of that, they need license plates since they are loaded, a towaway permit most likely won't be valid.
COndoCruisers post is out in left field and doesn't even apply to your situation.
To tag these trailers (if they are just purchased), the easiest way is probably to use the State of Maine. A lot of states these days want to verify VIN numbers, etc. Maine can do it via mail. You also don't pay sales tax on trailer is ME. I have used MBI trailers in the past and would recommend them. Once you have the tag issue taken care of, the cheapest way for inspection would be to have service truck come out and do all of the trailers at the same time. This avoids paying the trucker for his time, especially if something unforeseen is found. Once you have inspection stickers and license plates on the trailer, it will be easy to have them moved, and in fact will be cheaper if you state this when looking for drivers.
The insurance will be provided by the trucking company. Make sure they have trailer interchange coverage that covers any trailer to the amount that satisfies you. They'll give you a certificate that states this.3loadedVans2moveSouth, BigBadBill, bullhaulerswife and 1 other person Thank this. -
So the regulation telling him what shape the equipment has nothing to do with it?
You don't even know what I'm doing so your comment is in right field.

i think he was talking about the medical card and commercial license.
the guy is hiring someone, so that would not be his problem -
You say "loaded".....loaded with what ? They do need to be legal, weight wise.

The trailers have to meet current minimum safety standards, i.e. brakes, tires, lights, etc. You can find what you need here: http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/administration/fmcsr/fmcsrguide.aspx?section_type=V

Please enlighten me, oh wise one, as to why someone who needs some power only trailers moved would need to know about CDL's, med cards, etc.
Do you even have experience at power only moves, besides turning the steering wheel? -
get ahold of a tow company as they operate under different rules than the rest of us
