i agree...but imo its not always bad when they have the chain law up...lol, CA OR and WA are bad about throwing that chain law up...and it isnt really nec. sometimes....but i agree with what ya said!!! -
What I said was "I think any remarks to the effect that people who chain are better drivers than those who won't are aimed at those that are just too lazy to do it or make all kinds of excuses not to when, in fact, it's because they don't know how and don't WANT to know how." It was not meant to imply that ALL those that don't chain are lazy and/or don't want to know how, just that any derogatory remarks regarding not chaining are typically aimed at those that are, not those with legitimate reasons for not chaining. There are situations where chaining and continuing is not advisable and there are situations where chaining and continuing is the proper course of action. IMO, a good driver knows the difference and drives accordingly and those that just flat to refuse to chain for ANY reason are either lazy or ignorant of the proper use of chains. Now, to clarify, drivers that never leave the deep south would be obviously excused because knowing when and how to chain would serve no purpose when you never see snow. Drivers that drive the northern US and canada SHOULD know when and how to chain just as much as they should know when and how to do a pre-trip.

I have chained, but only to get out of a bad situation. As I will still, but only to be safe. But I must say when I first became a trucker no one taught me how to do it. Now I know and it's not hard. But it is not fun at all!! That tire sock thing looks pretty promising though.

I chain in order to AVOID getting stuck. Once I'm stuck it's too late. Chaining in a foot of snow or mud REALLY bites. Now I suspect the the conditions that I drive in are allot different that the conditions that you drive in so we are not comparing apple to apples here. Living in Northern Alberta, I do see winter conditions from time to time and rarely do I see conditions which would require a truck to chain up just to continue down the road. It happens but VERY rarely. We do, however, get conditions where chains are needed to pull a river hill ( we have one not far away 8% for 2 miles) and for a truck to sit and wait hours for conditions to improve just to climb that one lousy hill just seems retarded to me. This is when the hill is snow covered and a truck will NOT make it without chains but will easily with. When the hill is icy (freezing rain) THAT's when drivers should pull over and wait for the sand trucks, not because they can't climb the hill but because, unless you chain EVERY axle, you can't descend the first side safely and since most trucks around here are 8 axle units and don't carry 16 chains, it's prudent to wait it out. This is an example of what I meant by knowing when to use them and when not to.Kittyfoot, Ezrider_48501 and Giggles the Original Thank this.

Its the same thing with ice, fog, high winds, hard rain.
Some decide to run in it, some do not. Does that make them lazy???
I can see better in fog and more comfortable than my husband is, and he has been driving longer than I have.
Its not a matter of laziness for all, or what we can or cant handle, its a personal choice that people shouldnt be ridiculed for .Shaneoboy21 and T...Street Thank this. -
There you go. If your comfortable running, then run, if your not, then don't. I think that its up to each individual and their own comfort level.
I know a LOT of O/O's that simply feel that if the weather is bad enough to throw chains, the load isn't worth it. And they reschedule if they can.
My husband prefers to get off the roads, not because of his abilities, but the 4 wheelers that think because they have 4wd they can still go the posted speed limit.
He had a BMW one time, coming on the interstate from the on ramp, it got beside him, broke loose and spun almost up under his hopper. He watched it all in his mirrors. After that, he'd had enough. Pulled off, took a nap, waited for all of them to go home and go to bed, then got up around 2am and ran. Roads were no better condition wise, just thinned out the idiots that thought they were OK to be on them.

Now my question is, how can you say you dont mind chaining or driving with them but just over a month ago you say you've never chained?
As for your original question if the road aint closed I'll put'em on and go, loaded or empty. I dont like it either but I aint setting just because a chain law is up.Giggles the Original Thanks this.
