its nice to have someone with you especially on long stretches of highway out there or someone to talk to besides the cb radio...
A foolish idea or a cool one?

My wife will be riding with me once I go solo. I think it will be great. we have only been apart for 3 nights in almost 4 years. So we are use to spending so much time together.

twenty-four years of truckin ,my wife has been with me on 2 trips.one a 3 day,the other, just over nite.we had so much fun.i would love to have her with me all the time.i guess when the youngest graduates(10yrs ),we'll try it. if she is your best friend, soul mate, and you love being with her....dont expect to get rich, just enjoy yourself
transportHER Thanks this. -
You hit the nail on the head right there. "best friend, soul mate, love being with each other AND DONT expect to get rich, Just Enjoy Yourself!" My husband and I fit that to a tee.
Once in a blue moon though, we do get aggravated at one another, but it just blows over and we get back to just enjoying each other. We laugh all the time, even when there are frustrations and THERE WILL be frustrations. This is a job and if you read and research on this forum, you both will get a pretty good overview of what to expect out here. We both enjoy the challenges of OTR. After a time, we found the perfect balance of who does what and when. I am good at Public Relations and Qualcomm communications and Ron is better at backing and of course he is the MUSCLE.
If you do decide to do this, take good notes while in training so you can reference them when you get on your truck. Also, go to a truck stop and just chat with some drivers. Ask questions about there experiences with their companies and life on the road.
Trust me, drivers LOVE to talk. Ron and I wish you well if you choose this life on the road.It is truly a different way of life. -
I can tell you from experience, driving with your wife will either strengthen your marriage tremendously, or completely destroy it.
The little things about her that bug you will bother you a whole lot more (and vice-versa, for her), since you will be together 24x7 in a space the size of a dumpster. OTOH, it's a great way to bond, and it's a lot better than driving alone, for numerous reasons.
Also, if you two are thinking of becoming owner-operators or lease operators, you had better be in total and complete agreement regarding personal and business finances before you sign on the line. -
Thanks for all the great replies! What a nice bunch of people here.
I have to tell you, there's a part of me that just wants to go for this. My wife, however, I think she's getting skiddish now that she sees I'm taking it seriously. I think she's scared of the idea of driving which knocks out a huge income advantage, and when I mentioned things for her to think about, like "diesel fumes" and "hazmat", she's having doubts I think. Me, I feel like in my gut I could just go for this. But no way would she want me gone for days and weeks at a time. So we'll see. Maybe there are other ways to sustain a life on the road. Or maybe she'll warm up to the idea.transportHER Thanks this. -
Let her ride in the truck with you for a month or two. Then maybe she won't be so apprehensive driving. She may just need to take this in smaller steps than you do.
HeWhoMustNotBeNamed Thanks this. -
Take a five day road trip in a car with her. Sleep in a tent. It will be a good test.

My wife and I drove team and made lots of money. Had a lot of fun too! If your wife doesn't have a cdl most companies will only let her ride with you during the summer months. As a husband/wife team you could easily achieve over $100,000 a year as company drivers. $200,000 if you are owner operators. Not sure where you got that figure for expediting. They usually make pretty good money too.
If you can talk your wife into getting her cdl do it as fast as possible so that she doesn't change her mind!
