As a newbie to this forum I would like to thank all you "oldtimers" for the input. I will be signing on with one of these mega companies this week...mostly because I got hooked on eating and can't seem to kick the habit. Of course I could always take Big Al's advise and just sign on with micky d's and get my food and still be home every night. But I do really want to see whats over that next hill.

Apply at Crete

Yeah I by no means expect roses and sunshine. I was hoping to grab Injun attention if I'm not mistaken he works for swift. Just got kinda leary about heartland

Swift will keep you out but at least you'll never be sitting. drove for them until Summer 2011 & had a good run with them, despite all of the horror stories I heard they were fine, no better or worse than any other big carrier! I'd go back with them.

Yeah swift told me 2 weeks out and Marten said 3 weeks out. I have no problem riding. And I have absolutely no problem with otr just tryin to stay outta California. Lol. I won't sit here and lie. My name should give away why I was drawn to Marten. Plus I know a driver there who loves em. But I just got choices here. But from what I've read about Heartland. God help.

well im just a recent grad i dont want to talk as if i personally know anything about these companies but i will say that it seems veteran drivers have a saying for swift Stop Whining Im ########## Training. also western xpress sent a couple prehires to some of my fellow students one having a fairly recent murder charge and the other fresh out of prison 6 months ago. also my instructor said that western xpress hires anyone so you have to wonder about a company that will take anyone regardless of their record

Of the 4 that you listed I have driven for Swift. I drove for them for a little over 3 years starting in flatbeds then reefer and finally vans. I had a good run and no real complaints except you have to drive and stay out to make money. I've heard bad things about Heartland and the games they play with the "50 cents in the green zone". They do indeed pay that per mile but cut your miles way down to compensate. Of the other 2 I get up's and downs from Western Express and Marten. If it were me I would choose a company that had several divisions and start like I did on a flatbed. You can then switch to vans if you don't like it but its hard to go the other way. Also, if you leave then you can sign onto either a flatbed or van company or someone hauling containers without having to go out with a trainer for several weeks.
