Seriously. This subforum is full of companies, large and small, that drivers (or former drivers) tell us to "stay away from!!!!!"
OK, so what do you want? What do you look for in a company, in the real world, that is?
I've worked for big and little companies, and it seems to me as if it's 6 of one, and a half dozen of others. I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again, "Trucking is NOT an easy job." It can be rewarding, it can be frustrating, it can be maddening. For those who have the right work ethic, and ambition, it can be very lucrative. For MOST of us (my opinion only), it's not quite that.
What I mean, what I am saying, is that I am just an "average" truck driver. Been doing it for 20 years, and still driving a company truck. I did L/P a brand new Century somewhere in the middle of those 20 years, but spent the money almost as fast as it came in, so when an engine rebuild was in the cards, I sold the truck, cheap, and went back to driving for someone else. But I still flash my lights for someone when they pass me, I still signal every lane change (even if there is no other traffic in sight), I still never park where I will be blocking other drivers, and I still try to do a little better on this trip than on the last one.
And I still envy those who are driving shiny, triple digit Petes or W9's, and often wonder why I didn't go that route. Well, probably because I just didn't have the ambition, or the discipline, that it takes. Maybe the fact that I am a first generation trucker might have something to do with it, maybe not. (Even to me, that sounds like "excuse making.)
Sorry for rambling on, but it just seems to me like 99% of the complaints on the "Bad Trucking Companies" forum comes from people who have "no idea".
It's a JOB, that's why "they" pay you to do it. If it was all "fun and games", people would be lining up to do it for free.![]()
ALL companies are BAD, what makes a GOOD company?

I agree 100% there are bad apples rotten eggs (trucking companies and scams) out there but if you do your research and listen you will do fine.I have a help thread up in the new driver section I want to help the people who don't know whats out there and to keep them from making some bad choices. We need more Veterans like you to speak up and give the advice that all new to the industry need.Trucking is a way of life not just a job.
Thank you -
@tracyq144 I fully agree with your feelings on this, I drove for three years and got out for various reasons. I want to go back to driving but using these forums as a tool to see what companies might be good or bad to check into, it's very confusing. I see a lot of well worded thought out complaints on certain companies, but at the same time the threads will be so many pages thick, with complaints that are more or less "that company stinks" from someone who just wasn't prepared for the lifestyle.
Personally I would love to have a good 9-5 office job, but I'm getting those urges to hit the road again and make some decent money. It's a tough life at times, but if you got what it takes, it can be rewarding. -
Yes, but people can listen to some veteran drivers to learn as well. It doesn't help anyone if everyone stays mum. I like to read the posts. You can usually tell what's what, and who's who. It's also entertaining.

Not all companies are bad. It's how the driver perceives the company to be. Some are good for some, bad for others. Ya just gotta know how to work kid. Lease purchase all the way around is a bad deal. None are good, some just worse than others. It's all about what is it that you are looking for. There is no perfect driving job unless you create it yourself.

This is very True do the homework Have a plan Follow through know before you leap

Truth is most people are lining up to work for free , Ever work all week and get a paycheck that says you OWE money ? Happens everyday...When drivers are told one thing and then get something else they are resentful....A good job ???? probably not many .. However a good job will pay you for ALL time spent conducting their bussiness...I shall be paid for pti's, Loading,unloading...waiting to load or unload....EVERYTHING...YOU WILL pay me for my time to stop and fuel your truck....There are jobs out there that do this I know because I have one,or they WILL be shut down by our union..I drive to live, I will never live to drive....

every trucking company is bad because this industry is so bad. this company can only do for you what you need them to do but you definately need too get paid. but this industry has turned into a paycheck nothing more. yes there are great companies that pay you for everything but most cant get those jobs.
so you need too research to figure out what works best for you ....
pay hometime etc... if i could i would get out and would be my advice to a newbie dont bother industry is changing and not for the better....bigdogpile Thanks this. -
How dare you...no one "lines up to work for free". Everyone has the dignity of their work when they come into this industry. The lease purchase scam, not withstanding (and BigDogPile, I did really fine in a lease purchase, and when I was done I returned the truck to them in an atmosphere of respect and the ability to return as a company driver, which I did) you are a albatross around the neck of any person who wants to better their life by driving a truck. I did. I'm sorry we aren't all at the soci-economic-level that you are, maybe you come from the right side of the tracks and we don't.
I love what truck driving did for my life. I'll never earn as much without a college degree.
I understand that you have a LTL union gig. Why don't you guys do more to pull up deserving drivers into your ranks? Why can't I get a gig (I'm a loyal worker who any terminal manager would be proud of), not to mention you (as your sister in the union)? I'm a good and experienced driver, I could help make profits soar....
It makes my head hurt. LTL isn't the answer, I've already been almost destroyed by a non union LTL company in regards to their lack of doubles training, and a horrible injury....
Can't the union answer reach out to ALL drivers? Can't we all make a dignified living? Can't we all be the best we can be in our highest potential?
Oh, Christ....I'm dreaming...The Teamsters hate anyone who isn't in their union. They don't recognize truckload. They hate pay per mile. they harp on Mexican drivers. They do their best to float their pension fund. All of you Teamsters everywhere should be organizing here and wherever you breathe. Please help us or ####.
(Here comes the snarky answer, maybe from their website to help calm the nerves of the drivers that they don't care about and hope will fail or go away. That means YOU!)Last edited: Mar 1, 2012
