I have had Sprint for several years now. Most of that time I used my cell phone as a modem with-out any extra charge, and the past 10 months or so, I have used two of their "modems" under their "Unlimited" plan.
First one was the S-720 PCMCIA that was relatively fast compared to using the cell-phone.
When I upgraded my laptop, I discovered that I could not use the standard card and had to get a new one. I sold my old one on eBay for $70.
I had been reading that the U-720 was the fastest, because it split the USB cord and data actually traveled faster, but the replacement cost for buying one outright was prohibitively expensive. I looked on eBay for a used one and after several weeks found one with a "Buy-It-Now" price of $35.
Bought it and my UPLOAD/DOWNLOAD speeds improved greatly.
They run as high as 1.3MBs UP/456KBs DOWN

Wozers, what are you doing online that would put you over the 5 gb monthly limit??? A whole dvd ripped off a torrent is roughly 1/5th that size (~1gb). Really even 200mb a day is quite a bit unless you are streaming tv to your laptop. Most of the ISP's have this limit to prevent people from running servers on residential lines... But to just surf the net you'd really have to do some heavy duty surfing to go over their normal limits.

Anyway, I'm just curious what you are doing to exceed 5gb in a month by only hitting a wifi hotspot 2x a week.
