How do people afford to take a week vacation every month? Does Schneider pay that good?

i wouldnt post saying the company your in orentation at has a good thing going when you have no idea its good or not yet as you havent even made it out of orentation yet also since your just starting out you really dont know what good is supoesed to to be in this industry
i enjoy typing with bad grammer and no punctuation

What to look for in a starter company is 1. They offer training. 2. they either don't have a lease to own program at all or its after a minimum of 6 months..better if its after a year and last but not least..3. Solo driving.

let me explain the last one..and I will use company names. CRST used to run team and still do I think..They would team up two rookies in a truck..not a rookie and experienced driver...accidents were high...PAM does the same thing..but it does boil down to personal preference..there are drawbacks and advantages to team and solo

Team:

A second set of eyes
A second brain
Team driving is SUPOSED to be safer because of those two reasons but it depends on who those two things are owned by because there are good drivers with good driving habits and bad divers with bad driving habits.

Solo:

Experienced drivers, once they know you are a rookie will bend over backwards to help you and keep you straight..they'll help you back by spotting etc..but remember..you are behind the wheel..you are the final say if that truck moves, stops, or turns and if anything happens..its your head..not theirs...

Same thing if team..if you are behind the wheel..the buck stops with you...

Other than that, ignore the part of the ad that says how many miles their drivers get on average because that will ALWAYS be a fluffed figure with a starter company..figure 2k to 2500 miles a week no matter what if solo..maybe 3500k for team trucks, split between the two team drivers..if you get more..count yourself lucky

Do pay attention to the cpm rate after training..it does vary a little and if you can work the system then it will turn to a benefit..

Thats the key is being able to work the system..and I mean the dispatch system...99 percent of all companies use the same formula for dispatching and who gets the load is first come first serve to the load planners so...:

1. day before delivery, estimated time available and probable hours available to drive to dispatcher..do this again upon arrival at delivery..even before you check in..and if you want to do it that day before you get there..even better..but still do it upon arrival for delivery..this puts you at the front of your dispatchers head, tells him you want to roll, and gets him to get the load planner looking at your truck.

2 drive so you always have hours available to keep driving..I've posted on this elsewhere..the magic number is a total on duty time a day of 8.75 hrs..if you can keep it in the ball park of that number you'll always have hours available.

3. don't deliver late. self explanatory

4. always show up early..a lot of shippers/recievers will be nice and try to work you in..there are exceptions (Walmart don't care at all) but a lot of places know your time is money and so is theirs...On top of that, someone will be late and they might just give you that driver's slot since you cared enough to show up early.

5. If the company runs paper logs its to your advantage but sadly..those companies are getting fewer and fewer..just ask an old truck driver in private why paper logs are better for the paycheck..

Other than that check out a company's safety record..company's with poor DOT inspections and lots of fix it tickets don't go there..they don't maintain their equipment..accidents due to equipment failure are few and far between and I don't count a blown steer as equipment failure..A lot of blown tires are due to improper tire inflation..either too low or too high which means the driver didn't check his tires which is ultimately human error. There are some that are caused by defects in the tires but not as many as you might think..(if you stop at least visually inspect the tires for nails etc too)

Same goes for brake failures...there was a crack in the drum or disk before the brake disintegrated and I guarantee it was visible.

Most accidents are a driver error..either the driver of the POV that was also involved or the truck driver's error whether we want to admit or not and I will catch flak for that statement I know..but it is true...All accidents are potentially avoidable by someone.

Those are the things that should drive your decision
