Well, hey. That's what the nice lady from USA Truck told me my pay would be after my weeks of training.

Been playing guitar for ten years now. The Stones are amazing. Anyway, I'll have to excuse your internet tough guy exterior. Lol. I've never worked anything but construction, auto, and factory. Fast food is out of the question, sir. You seem to assume I'm unable to do all this when, in fact, I'm looking at this from a father's view. The road is no place to start a family or raise my little boy. I got my CDL because it's a good career and my father does it and his did before him. I want to get my year in and work local. My wife and two year old need me. I probably wouldn't even be here if I hadn't been laid off. I was making 15.75 an hour with full benefits. Good enough for me, especially at my age. Anyway, thanks for all your kind words, brother man.

Thanks for the heads up. Either way, more home time and regional. I'll take that.

Now, about that beachfront property in Vegas. How close is it to the strip? :D

if you have a wife and a kid to support, and you go to work for USA truck, and you save all your money, you MIGHT be able to afford to pay for a cab to take your wife and son to go file for Welfare.....You can and WILL make more working at Mc Donalds 40 hrs a week then spending weeks on the road with USA Truck.

You'd be 1000 times better off, maning up, going to TMC or Maverick and pull a flatbed and be home every weekend. If you bust your butt you can make $35,000 - $40,000 first year with them.

If you lived closer to NJ you could work for (might wanna call them anyway just to check) Watkins Shepard I made $46,000 first year with them, and east coast drivers are home every weekend...

But even between stevens and USA you'll make more at Stevens, how much more i dont know but i garentee it'll be more then you'll make sitting for days waiting for a load at USA truck

I would LOVE to flatbed. That's what my dad does. But to flatbed you need a year's experience so I've been told.

My plan as of right now is still to just go to Stevens and get this training over with, at least. But I came here hoping to find an alternative. You're the only one offering helpful advice, American Trucker. Appreciate you, my man.

    your welcome

No exp required to flatbed at:

    TMC
    Maverick
    Decker
    Boyd Bros
    McElroy
    Prime
    Swift
    Werner
    Roehl
Watkins Shepard (you'd have to wait on the waiting list to get on the Flatbed side)
etc there are more but thats all i can think of off the top of my head

I work for a Heavy Haul company and came here with no Flatbed Exp, i had 3.5yrs Driving Exp just no flatbed. Being on the East coast is a great place to get a FB job. Guys out west are very limited with FB options

I totally just checked out TMC and Maverick. Both look amazing. I'm outside Maverick's hiring area by just a little bit, so I'm gonna call them anyway and see what they have to say. Gonna check out those other companies as well. I'm hoping one will be gracious enough to accept me. And to think if I had stayed one more day I'd have had my certificate. Oh well. Could've been the last time I'd get to see my old man, but thankfully it wasn't. Thank you again for your help, A-T. Most excellent of you, dude.

Let me put it in economic terms a little better for you..

Stevens is refrigerated freight..things like meat, veggies, juice, fruit..things that nobody can live without no matter what the world economy is doing..

USA Truck..dry van..they haul anything and everything that doesn't require a reefer..maybe some canned goods usually consumer stuff like clothes, car parts, washers/dryers and so on that right now a lot of people are passing right by in the stores..

    So....Refrigerated vs dry van..

Refrigerated..definitely..I put it like that because of your wife and little boy..You don't want to be sitting..especially in your first year where rookie driver wages are in the .20's per mile..the little bit less that stevens is paying per mile will be made up for when they keep your truck moving..Thats why your dad liked em so much..he was always under a load or on his way to get loaded and why he still has fond memories of his time there..

Yes..for your first year you are going to be gone a lot and its going to be hard on you and the wife and your little one..That's the price you pay to get your foot in the door..the results after that year make up for it when you can take your choice of any company/driver position out there as long as you keep your DAC clean and don't jump ship.
