You have the right attitude... always be a safe and courteous driver dont run the hammer lane unless to pass...use 4 ways climbing hills or some dummy might rear end you... know your limitations.. take your time.. do the posted speed limit... especially on ramps and exits ... being rushed isn't a good thing..give em lips service at terminals if they try and walk away... .. don't drive tired.. at the 1st sign of nodding your head .... pull over for a power nap.. then get out and walk around do some jumping jacks and toes touches... haha ..... u can be a girly girl and truck.. lots of girls on the road... even lil old ladies that will drive rings around most.... you don't have to be 1 of the guys... make friends ask questions don't believe everything you hear.. ask for 2nd and 3rd opinions.. lend a helping hand to others... do periodic checks while on the road (do walk arounds) air pressure is important for all them tires and you always want good thread on your steer tires........................................ happy trucking ... Ok, your first challenge will be company training. If you get a male trainer, be very aware some try to sexually harass female drivers. Have a cell camera with you and or some video/voice recorder (you will need to show proof of trainer improper conduct otherwise nobody will believe you). Know how to contact the right person in the company to report what is going on. And if necessary, call 911. Let trainer know what your boundaries are and what you will do if those are trespassed. If you don't feel comfortable with your trainer, contact company immediately and request another one. Don't believe if trainer tells you have to shower with him or her because they have only one shower credit in their card (you may find this advice irrelevant but you would be amazed how many new female drivers fall for this BS). Don't sleep in the same bed with trainer. Don't allow trainer to expose him/herself in front of you, don't have sexual conversations with your trainer and if they insist on it, tell them that's unacceptable and if it continues you will report them to company (and record the conversation). Dress appropriately, act and talk appropriately. You said you saw videos on YouTube about this issue, not sure you saw anything by TruckerDesiree. She has a blog under her name and posted a lot of very valuable info I would suggest you to check it out.lilsister and Female Driver Thank this.

...and one more thing, if you decide to team with someone, pick a lady partner instead of a guy. Most times guys will try to hit on their female partners.

Thing to remember is that 98% of us are all decent people, we all have families and are just out here to make a living....
Yes unfortunately there is that other 2% that should be, well just lets say give the trucking industry a bad image, Although in all the years I've driven I bet I can count on one hand the amount of times I've run into them...
Just use a common sense and you'll be great...
Good Luck !!!mustang970 and lilsister Thank this. -
welcome to the world of trucking yes it is very exciding you can see the US and get paid for it with that said yes it is a man's world out here. Yes there are time may it be short and in between I play the "woman card" but for the most part the drivers out here do treat you with respect just first rule ....never leave your truck at night after you park before you park go in the truck shop do what you have to to get ready to shut down. if you do have to leave your truck do not walk in between the trucks you want to be always safe driving but more so when you parked. perplanning is very important once you know where you are going make sure you know where you are going to park for the night I say this to all the newbeies .....there is alot more to trucking then just sitting in this sit and driving .....and please like a a poster said dont start looking like the typical truck driver if you get to a truck stop during the day ...take a walk watch what you eat just stay healthy out here ....good luck

Thank you all so much for the advice!! I can't tell you much more excited you've all made me on entering this industry! Yes, I will have to be careful and use common sense, but if the comments here are any indication(which I think they are) of what kind of people I can expect to meet, then I think I've found my home! I do plan to dress appropriately(aka covered up) and still be a woman(um, because being a woman is a powerful thing, and also just cause I love girly stuff...lol). I can get along with just about anyone, but hardly ever allow anyone to walk over me (I'll thank my knife-wielding, sailor-cussing, beat-an-armidillo-dead-with-a-baseball-bat Grannie for that!) I have appreciated every single response here and will take them with me on my adventures!! Thanks all!!! And Happy Trucking!!

Not only the males will do this, so would females. Cant see the one side of the coin on this.

Just dont think of it as a job.. Keep an even Head about you and dont let shippers/recievers/other drivers get on your nerve.. Like ive said before you have to be strong willed to survive out here otherwise you will get ate up and spit out faster than you can think.. its not a job its a lifestyle that most people have no idea about. dont let those 100 mph dispatchers try to dictate your life.. if your tired or out of hours stick to your guns and tell them. remember your a rolling missle at 80,000 lbs and a tired or sick driver is just as bad as putting a gun to the head of a person its just a matter of time before it happens and dont let it happen to you. Go into trucking with a clear mind and plan and you will do fine..
Taino, lilsister, Wargames and 1 other person Thank this. -
Make sure you watch your surroundings and becareful where you park. Doesnt matter if its a truck stop or rest area, always be on guard.
From new to old drivers you will get the perverts. Its like they never seen a women before (probably means their never home). They will make comments and ALWAYS watch out WHO you allow to help/assist you when you are alone. Most drivers will want something in return.
Becareful and safe journey!lilsister Thanks this. -
