I will concede that the mpg off the ECM is spurious at best. But as for pump to pump calculations, if people can't get the tire rotation per mile for the tire they are using and put it in the ECM so that the calculations are close to reality, that is their problem. That way the odometer would be dead on. I have seen very few ECM mpg figures that were closer than .5 mpg to what the real mpg was. Even though I know that all the values are correct in the ECM.... transmission number, rear end ratio, tire rotation, etc..... my ECM alway shows about .6 mpg higher than pump to pump hand calculated. I don't think Henry's is off any more than that. He has discussed his hand calculated results and it still puts most of us to shame.

IIRC, Henry is running one of those straight trucks not an 80k tractor trailer. I may be wrong?

He is running a class 8 Freightliner pulling a 53ft dry van in all the articles I have read. I don't remember the model of the tractor or the trailers manufacturer. I do remember he has done a lot of little things that have added up to decent MPG gains. The one I kind of chuckled about was tucking the trailer license plate up into the back sill right below the doors instead of hanging it underneath the sill below the lights. May not be a big MPG improvment, but it helps.Les2 Thanks this.

no. he is running a cascadia and a 53' trailer.

Was reading over some of the blog posts. When he slowed to 60 mph, on a run, his mpg went to 10.51 mpg on the ECM. Now say what you will about how the ECM compares to actual, but with an ECM figure like that, he has to be doing well over 8 or even 9 mpg actual pump to pump.Les2 Thanks this. -
what kind of job is this since you can get so good fuel economy
here we work in city 70k tipper truck get about 4.7mpg -
Here is an interesting read. Pete 389 getting high 7's low 8's running 70 mph tanking fuel.

It looks like his truck is stock (not modified) what kind of speed does he travel at? Maybe his dedicated runs are downhill? If I'll run at 55mph at night time, no traffic and stop when wind blows I might get close to those numbers. Nice advertisement for Frightliner and Detroit though.

I'm currently getting aroubd 7 mpg with a 3406E was 475 now has a 600 hp tune, but all this is in flat ground, average speed is just under 50 mph not quite city, very few traffic lights on a 100 to 120 miles one way.
I get arund 8 to a 8.5 on the Peterbilt with a serie 60 detroit 12.7 365 hp, there are a few big cam 350 and 400 cummins tha do about the same as my Pete. -
It will be interesting to see someone on here put some of Bruce's tactics into practice. All I ever read thats positive about PP is written by Bruce himself. From my couple of conversations with him......
well you know what they say "if you cant say something nice dont say anything"

The stock OEM exhaust manifold and turbo on the Cat 3406E is not good for fuel mileage. I switched to the Pittsburgh Power ported and polished exhaust manifold with the larger turbo and cover to pick up 6/10ths mpg. A pair of Walker Megaflow Mufflers will give you around 3/10ths mpg and now that you have improved the exhaust flow out, you need to remove the restriction going in by getting rid of the stock paper filter to replace with a Fleet Air Filter to gain another 3/10ths mpg.
Note: If you go to a bigger turbo with no wastegate you may want to replace stock OEM CAC for either a Duralite or a Vista Pro CAC that can handle 50+ lbs of boost pressure. I went with the Vista Pro that is an American made Duralite copy with a better warranty and less expensive.
