I do it for the fuel mileage.62 mph would be speeding for me,I try and avg 58 mph.My fuel mileage this week so far is 8.1 on 2600 miles.I buy my own fuel and it's the biggest and one of the only cost I have control over.I make 10,000 dollars more a year by driving at lower speeds and thats not counting maintence cost. The maint. on a truck that gets drove hard is alot more than a truck that is driven at slower speeds.Took me along time to get used to doing this but when I saw the big difference on my paycheck,I was hooked.Yes you'll get to the truckstop 1 1/2 hrs before me on a 1000 mile trip, but I don't really like truckstops all that much.I do this for the money, not the glory. My fuel mileage is on both heavy and light loads.

Don't get me wrong,if I was a company driver making .34/mile I would be driving as fast as I could along with everbody else.I thank God I don't have to do that anymore.I work for a 300 truck fleet and we have a superior safety rating. Our prepass is now at a 5% pull in rate.On avg. every 100 scales I get pulled in on 5,I've gone a month and got a green light on every scale.I'm sorry everyone has to pass me,but the money is to big to pass up.It's just buisness to me.By the way,my trucks governed at 72 mph.

Yeah ironpony,It doesnt always work out, sometimes I have to push it and it sucks to see that fuel mileage drop.I'm just like everybody else, that load has to be there on time.Sometimes it's my fault,by picking a tightly scheduled load,or goofing off at a casino to long, etc.Sometimes it's weather, traffic, wrecks, etc.Where I work,we don't have a 1000 loads to pick from as soon as we get empty. So I run everyone I get as efficently as I can.

In the six weeks I was a trainee, I'd often drive the truck at 60, that way if I ever came up on a truck doing 59, I'd have plenty of power to pass, and I could avoid those 61.8 mph vs 62.0 mph drag races on two lane freeways. Sometimes if some one would catch me while doing 62, I'd drop it down below 60 so they could pass faster. Not sure if any other truck driver ever did that for me though. It was always kind of a challenge to figure out where my govenor would kick-in and the other guys would kick out. I usually liked to pass on slight uphills that way my govenor would not kick out. I kind of miss truck driving.

:biggrin_2559:YEA Thats all we need more STUPID laws, all that would do is raise the amount of fuel used NOW THATS STUPID

Amen Brother,ATA,and TCA are lobbying congress right now to get all U.S. trucks governed at 65 mph, like they have in Canada.I think thats crazy.I don't go out west anymore because my company doesn't go there.I wouldn't drive 58 mph going across KS, NE,WY.TX,NM and AZ because its flat and I could probably get good mpg's running a little faster. If they get it passed I think it will backfire on them. All those trucks running the same speed and trying to pass each other, would cause major traffic problems and the public would go bannana's having to stay behind 5 or 6 trucks blocking all the lanes.I think at that point the truckers would actually get together and shut down. The big trucking company's work very hard each day trying to wipe out the small and indepedent trucker and heres another fine example.

    The hammer lane....

No, what's stupid is thinking that it's perfectly ok and safe to run 15 to 20 miles an hour slower than everyone else, especially when idiot #2 just can't wait to get around idiot #1 because he going a half mile an hour faster and jumps in the hammer lane causing everyone to slam on brakes to keep from ### ending him then running side by side for ten minutes, sounds pretty stupid to me...

And don't give me the use more fuel crap, learn how to drive and spec a truck properly and there is no reason to run that slow, and if you are running that slow you are a hazzard, especially in the 75 and 80 mph states..
