On 6% grades like Black Mountain in NC, I put it in 7th and flip my crappy jakes on. Coast down at about 35-40 and only tap the brakes a few times on the 5 mile stretch. I have a 10 speed by the way.

As far as the twin sticks, I drove one around my family's farm for a while. PITA if you ask me lol.

I agree a twin stick was hard to drive but I think with time it would be just part of the job

And yes not many people I know has ever heard of twin sticks

Why not downshift instead of smoking the brakes?....I do it whenever necessary as I was trained to do by my company...

Are ya'll talking twin sticks or that $#@&$%# contraption Mack had in some old dumps? Got in an old mack that had beeen relegated to offroad one time and it took 30 minutes to find a usable gear. Never even looked for the next one.

I was lucky enough to get my training in SLC, UT. where we regularly practiced on Parley's Summit (I80 between Park City, Ut. and SLC, UT.) where the grades are between 3-6% for about 10mi.
Our instructors wouldn't let us use the jake at all, we had to learn stab braking and the proper gears to be in. They'd also intentionally have us go too high of a gear, get going too fast and learn recovery by stab braking to 10mph below the speed we wanted then back into the proper gear.
