It costs me as much to get a dedicated Mi-Fi as it does to put a hot spot on my phone.

If you get a phone call while using the hotspot, your internet connection is dropped and the phone call has priority.

I have had times I was on the computer looking at routes while at the same time discussing it with the dispatcher.

Something that would have been impossible with the phone hotspot.

Actually that's a good point about adding the hotspot feature on my current iPhone. For another $20 that would give me a total of 5 gig. However back in October I didn't realize I'd be going back on the road now and stuck with AT&T to save a few dollars. Had I known I would of jumped to Verizon as AT&Ts coverage and voice quality still sucks. Oh well, 6 more months and I'll have a Verizon LTE iPhone.

My buyer had cold feet today so I may be hitting the road with my antique, original iPad and AT&T hotspot on my phone after all.

Truckstops are about $20 a month. You get what you pay for. Most work, some better than others. But the 20% or so that are broke take forever to get fixed. I got to the point I would go inside and tell the manager how to do a simple reset. Find the antenna and park close to it if you can.

But there is expanding free wifi. Motels next to truckstops are free. Even an apartment complex you can pick up an unprotected signal. A few states like IA have free wifi in the rest area's.

I think the website is freewifihotspot.com or something like that, lists hundreds of free hotspots. I have a keychain wifi finder that is pretty cool. It has a signal readout and helps me find the best spot without powering on the laptop.

Mifi is the way to go.

The problem with free wifi is lack of security . I have had a Verizon MiFi for over 2 years and have only had 1 location where I couldn't get a signal .

That's what I have but I don't think that plan is still available.

I'm looking at the Samsung Galaxy Note with its 5.3" screen to replace my iPhone for NetFlix.

Apparently responding to criticism over a controversial policy, AT&T has clarified the circumstances under which a wireless data customer on an unlimited plan will face reduced speeds.
The nation's second-largest mobile-phone company explained that a customer with a smartphone that works on a 3G or 4G network will receive a text message when his or her usage approaches 3 gigabytes in one billing cycle. That customer will get reduced data speeds if 3 GB or more is consumed in a month. AT&T cautioned it won't send a subsequent text if a person reaches the limit a second time.
Customers with a 4G LTE smartphone and an unlimited data plan will be subject to the same restrictions except that their data limit is 5 GB.
AT&T noted that its subscribers will still be able to use as much data as they want even if they exceed their limit; they just won't receive the same throughout speed that they are accustomed to.
"Streaming video consumes the most data of all possible activities and is often the reason consumers are among the top 5% of heaviest users," AT&T explains on a webpage detailing its policies.

Just piggyback like everyone else. Last Friday night I packed up the laptop and when my 4G card blinked out I heard shouting. Two trucks over someone yells "SOME SUMB*TCH CUT ME OFF AT THE BEST PART!!"

Now I'm beginning to understand why it's been downloading so slow lately.

    Lmao, that's funny.

You should be able to create a password for your mobile hotspot, that would suck having others slowing down your connection.
