Has anyone attended Eagle Driver Training in Lake in the hills IL ?
It's very very close to home so if they are a good school that would be kind of convenient.

    Thanks for the feed back

Which eagle are you planning to attend? I went to the one up in Rockford good place real good instructors. 2nd time thru 1st time back in the 90s pretty knew what was going on just had to do 160 to get back into trucking. But they did a good job with everyone only had one not pass the Il. test the first time out. Dont know much about the other locations was at Lake in the Hills once had quite a few people at once but not to bad.

    Thanks Packerfan,

I am looking at the one in Lake in the hills. It's about five minutes from my house. I am also looking at some of the company schools.

Riddleman for what its worth here's my two cents worth of advice. I would stay far far away from company schools I would not want to be tied down to a company with a contract for a year and most if you quit are more expensive than a private school. There are grants and loans to pay for most schools and quite a few company's will have some sort of tuition reimbursement that will help offset your original investment. Plus attending a private school you will most likely receive multiple pre-hires and have a greater choice on which carrier to begin your career with. Remember most of the company's that hire new drivers are training company's just try to stick it out 6 months to a year(kind of think of it as going to prison or a service deployment) if you can do that you can find plenty of opportunities in the trucking industry.

In february I attended Eagle training at their Kenosha branch through gateway.
I loved it. I was the only one to pay out of the four of us, the others got a grant or something through the unemployment office...

The training was solid. It was 200 hours. That was split between classroom, yard, and then driving. There was also remedial training while the rest of the class drove.

They will help you find employment before you graduate and will also help you find employment for your entire career.

All around I was very happy with the school and am glad i attended. I had five offers by the time I graduated.... And most good companies, like the one I'm at, will pay tuition reimbursement.

    Thanks Packerfan and Poa Triv,
I am definitely leaning towards a private school for all of the reasons you've stated packerfan. I've been lurking on this site for awhile now and some of the stories about starter company schools and jobs really make you do a gut check.
Poa, I spent some time on Eagle's website reading all of the student testimonials (of course they are all positive) so it's reassuring to here you echoing all of their statements in an open forum.
It looks like if you take your time and do your homework trucking can be a pretty decent 2nd career. I'm 47 and looking to make some changes in my life and OTR or regional driving are appealing to me.

    Poa Triv Thanks this.

Riddleman your right take your time and do your homework you will do just fine. Trucking is not an easy career, the work is not that physically demanding but getting used to the lifestyle can be tough. Most new guys find it difficult to spend days or weeks away from home and family. And yes the pay for new drivers is to say the least low but if you can stick it out and try to find a good company fit( to me a good company fit balances pay and hometime) trucking can be a good 2nd career. Don't believe everything you read on here not all training company's are as bad as some will try to make you believe. Most trucking company's have a very high driver turnover rate especially training company's and most people happy with there job don't spend a lot of time on here praising there company. Being from N. Illinois you should not have to much trouble finding a company that has ether a dedicated account of regional freight but you will probably have to pay your dues first.
