Ok so I would like to get a reasonably priced radio for my truck. Not trying to contact the moon or anything. I run primarily west coast so I would like to be able to get weather and traffic info from other drivers. I need some input on radio types. My problem is that my company has a no modification rule that includes excessive antennas. I'm in a 2007 Columbia, and if I can't simply screw the antennas into the mirror mounts I'm probably S.O.L. Any thoughts?

541johnson Thanks this.

Uniden 880 is the best working CB made in quite some time. Weather works well and many other useful features. If money is an extreme issue then look at the Midland 1001LWX.
K40 and Firestik make flexible fiberglass 4' antennas that tune well on most trucks and resist breaking so easily. -
" The key to a properly tuned dual or cophased setup is tuning each antenna seperatly using a seperate 18 ft 50 ohm coax. Once you get each antenna tunes to the lowest possible swr (Mine are at 1.1-1) then you hook up the cophased cable and double check the SWR. If they need further tuning once the cophased cable is hooked up then you have to make sure to tune both antennas the same IE moving the stinger up or down the same on both antennas "
Makes sence however if you change the coax to cophase the antennas would that not nagate what you have done with the tuneing ?
When the coax is NOT 50 ohms which a phasing coax is not it WILL detune the antennas ......cuzzin it Thanks this. -
Also BTW, combine that 880 radio with a little KL60 (60w amplifier about the size of a pack of cigs) which can be concealed and run from your radio power points or a cig lighter, it will give it the boost of most export radios plus you have the features and weather of the 880.

They ARE tenneeee ... I had one on 10 FM that I bolted to the back of a old alinco .... -
Or for about the same price of the KL-60 you can get the KL-203 about the size of a sandwich. And about 100 watts output power.
-
How much should I expect to pay for a peak and tune? What makes the Uniden 880 a better radio than say a cobra 29? Does running coax require mounting extra stuff to the truck?
-
It's cheaper to buy the KL-60 amp that RR said. And you would have a more powerful station.
-
The 880 has a very good quality included noise cancelling mic. It is clearer on transmit audio and receive. Weather is excellent quality and several color options.
Peak for the 880 may run $45 or more. Be SURE whomever works on it expresses confidence in that particular radio.
