I will be traveling between the USA and Canada on a regular basis as Commercial Truck Driver (CDL License). I am a USA born citizen. Ten years ago – I was a victim of indenity fraud here within the USA. Someone was using my ID (Drivers License) illegally which resulted as a “felony” on my record. Since then I believe I corrected this; but I am not one hundred percent sure. As we all know some things mysteriously come back to haunt you when you originally thought that you fixed them. How can I verify that my background record is clean and free of any false felonies, etc? What USA government agency should I contact and what Canadian government agency should I contact to do a background check on me? And what are the cost involved?

The best answer is to grab your passport, drive north to Canada, and try to cross the border. They will not let you in if the record shows that you have a felony. It's a long drive from where you live but a very definitive answer to your question. I doubt that you will ever get Canadian Immigration to give you the information in writing or by telephone.

Contact the nearest us office of the Canadian Consulate. I know there is one in NYC but I'll bet there are more so there should be one closer to you.

We had one guy go through the process after being turned away at the boarder for a felony weapons charge.

He was purchasing an antique rifle when he got a call from his mom having trouble w/ a drug dealing tennant.

He tossed the old gun in his car and spead over only to see the druggie getting physical w/ mom so he used the nearest object to beat the druggie to a pulp.

He got a 'weapons offense' charge for using an antique rifle as a club! Also the damage to the gun ruined it's value.

The judge tossed the case out but the arrest record for a felony weapons charge still popped up in the Canadian customs computer.

He got the package from the consulate and w/ the required letters from his Police Chief and neighbors who said he was rehabilitated [the judge wrote one too!] and the Canadians allowed him to enter their country...

Contact the consulate they have an 'app' for that! LOL

    Good.

Back before 9/11 they would check every driver for 24 hours once or twice a year. I used to tell all our 'new guys' that if the Canadian Customs asked 'Were you ever arrested?', to respond 100% truthfully as they already have your entire history up on the screen when they ask.

I had one guy in his mid 40's and they were looking at a Disorderly offense from when he was 19, something trivial to him and the judge at the time but it was on his record.

Those 24 hour checks caught drivers who had fibbed about felonies on their applications every time.

it's my understanding that even though we can have our criminal records expunged. they never REALLY go away. and canada will find it.

you can pull up your own record and not see it. but it's still in the system somewhere.

My dad had to get a background check done when the Oxnard, CA police caught my uncle driving while intoxicated and he gave them a licence with my dads name but his picture on it. When they ran his prints his real record popped up. We found out that he had stolen my dads birth certificate on a visit and went to a small NM town and got a new license made, claiming to be my dad. Since my dad made yearly trips to Mexico for school purposes, he didn't want any surprises when he crossed the border. nothing else came up thankfully.
